2002 Edition
The second Wiley internet edition of the Online Atlas of the United States and Canada was activated in August 2002. The primary changes include the updating of population maps from the 2000 Census and agriculture maps from the 1997 Census of Agriculture. In addition, a number of new thematic maps are included. The maps used in the 2002 edition were researched and downloaded since the December 1999 submission of the first Wiley Online Atlas.

Preface
For over twenty-five years I have taught the class Geography of the United States and Canada at West Virginia University. My general philosophy of teaching is that geography has a special role in the physical and social sciences, that is, the description, illustration, analysis, and explanation of spatial patterns with respect to natural and human phenomena. In keeping with this philosophy I have always required an atlas to accompany the textbook in the Geography of the United States and Canada course.
For twenty years my students used the Oxford Economic Atlas of the United States and Canada. I still consider the Oxford Economic Atlas the best printed teaching atlas of this region in overall physical and human content and in the color and design of maps. The Oxford Economic Atlas was last reprinted in 1986 with 1970s data and eventually became unavailable from the publisher. After reviewing numerous atlas alternatives, for the last few years I used the standard Goodeâs World Atlas from Rand McNally. Global in its coverage Goodeâs small section on North America has some good thematic content maps, but its overall treatment is not complete.
Concerned by the lack of comprehensive and up-to-date map material for a college level course, I planned for years to compile my own color North American geography teaching atlas. However, rather than publishing a printed book, the combined technology of the Internet, student accessible university computer centers and PowerPoint style teaching presentations have allowed me to design my own electronic Online Regional Atlas of the United States and Canada. This atlas is structured to follow the chapter organization of the geography textbook I have used for years, Birdsall and Florinâs Regional Landscapes of the United States and Canada, 1999, Fifth Edition, John Wiley & Sons publishing.
The maps in the Online Regional Atlas primarily come from public domain sources on the Internet. The number, quality and coverage of these sources continues to proliferate. The maps used in this first edition of the Online Regional Atlas were researched and downloaded from January through August 1999. This first edition was used in the fall of 1999 in a West Virginia University United States and Canada geography course with 55 students. On this Wiley WWW site is the second edition of the Online Regional Atlas as streamlined in the fall 1999 class and as researched through December 1999. These maps illustrate the most up-to-date data available in cartographic form. As new maps and information become accessible they will be integrated in future atlas editions. A small percent of the maps are from nonpublic domain WWW sites, textbooks, and scanned maps from topical atlases. These maps are used under copyright permission for educational purposes only and may not be republished except with the permission of the original publishers. The titles, publishers, sources, and URLs for all maps are listed in the Online Regional Atlas Table of Contents.
The maps in the Online Regional Atlas are the same as those used in my Geography of the United States and Canada course PowerPoint class presentations. The Online Regional Atlas maps and the textbook maps are used in the map portion of each geography examination. The atlas maps can be downloaded for electronic presentations or the production of color overheads. The Online Regional Atlas twenty-four-hours-a-day accessible, electronic supplement made available by John Wiley & Sons Publishing for Birdsall and Florinâs Regional Landscapes of the United States and Canada.

Acknowledgments
The first edition of the Online Regional Atlas of the United States and Canada was made possible by an instructional enhancement grant by the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences and Dean M. Duane Nellis. Funds were allocated for the summer of 1999 to research and create an electronic atlas, to develop an accompanying course WWW site, and to revise course content material. A portion of the funds was allocated to graduate teaching assistant Chad M. Paul to help with the above tasks. Chad was responsible for much of the course WWW site design, revising and colorizing Wiley maps, and creation of several original atlas maps. Two undergraduate research assistants also contributed in Internet map searching. Fred Grinnan, spring 1999, found a number of the maps used in the first edition atlas, and Molly McDade, summer 1999, helped organize the Table of Contents. The first edition of the atlas was placed on the West Virginia University Wise Library electronic reserve system in the fall of 1999. I thank Libby DeHaan for her help. Finally, the Department of Geology and Geography at West Virginia University is committed to the integration of technology in its instructional mission. I thank Department Chair Trevor Harris for his support and Randy Crowe, department computer systems administrator, for his expertise and assistance.
This second edition of the atlas was made possible by Nanette Kauffman, Editor, College Publishing, John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Through Nanetteâs vision this atlas is now available to hundreds of teachers and thousands of students studying the United States and Canada. I would also like to thank Assistant Editor, Alicia Solis, for her help in the final arrangements of atlas production and placing the work online. The second edition of the atlas is enhanced by dozens of maps for which copyright permission has been obtained. For their permission I thank:
The titles, publishers, sources, and URLs for all maps are listed in the Online Regional Atlas Table of Contents.
All of the above individuals played a role in fulfilling my long-term dream of an atlas designed for the regional approach in teaching the geography of the United States and Canada.
