Understanding the Global Reshuffle: How Invasion Science Reveals Our Impact on the Natural World

As long as humans have travelled between continents, we have carried other species with us and in our age of globalization, it has become more urgent to understand the spread and impact of invasive species. A new Tansley review in New Phytologistidentifies four new strategies to aid scientists in our understanding of global change processes.

“We analyze shortcomings of past research but also show the potentials of the research fields to overcome these by: addressing species environment interactions through model system research; accounting for context-dependences through multi-site studies; reducing biases by focusing on neglected invasions in harsh or undisturbed habitats; and avoiding the ‘ghost of invasion past’ problem by anticipating instead of extrapolating future invasion risks," said Dr. Christoph Kueffer from the University of Zurich.
