Researcher Glen Wright to take over Wiley’s Exchanges Blog
Hoboken, NJ – May 7, 2015 – John Wiley & Sons, Inc., is pleased to welcome Glen Wright, a research fellow at the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations (IDDRI) in Paris, as the first guest editor of Wiley’s Exchanges blog. For one week, starting May 11, 2015, he will take over the blog’s reins to explore “The PhD Path Less Travelled.”
Mr. Wright, who is also a PhD candidate at the Australian National University and the editor of Academia Obscura, was selected from a pool of entrants in the first Early Career Researcher (ECR) Takeover Week contest held by Wiley Advisors—Wiley’s free membership program designed to connect with and learn from early career researchers. The Advisor program gives new researchers the opportunity to consult on scholarly publishing topics, while Exchanges blog provides the platform to share ideas and information among all those involved in the creation of academic research.
As guest editor, Mr. Wright will lead a discussion on the varied journeys experienced in achieving a PhD, as well as the opportunities after completion. Articles selected by Mr. Wright for the blog include:
- Do what you love, love what you do: Lessons from the first year
- Improving PhD completion rates: Where should we start?
- PhDs Gone Pear Shaped: A chat with my mate Dave
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to connect with a broad audience through Wiley’s Exchanges blog and to challenge the perceptions of the PhD experience,” Mr. Wright said about the Exchanges takeover. “Despite the challenges faced by PhD candidates and the high attrition rates, the PhD continues to be, at least in our shared imagination, a rigid, 3-4 year, in-out process. This week I want to share some stories, have some discussion, and show that the PhD process is, in reality, an altogether different beast.”
Philip Carpenter, Executive Vice President, Research at Wiley, commented, “We are delighted to have Mr. Wright as our first guest editor. Exchanges allows us to really open up discussion about research and scholarly communication with, and between, all of the communities we work with, and it’s exciting to have an Early Career Researcher help us to shape that conversation.”
