Wiley announces strong performance in 2015 Journal Citation Reports release

John Wiley & Sons, Inc., today announced a strong performance in Thomson Reuters® 2015 Journal Citation Reports (JCR) release. A total of 1,200 Wiley titles (approximately 70%) were indexed, with 11 titles indexed for the first time. Our strength as a society partner is also clearly in evidence, with over 73% of society titles at Wiley achieving an Impact Factor.  In 2014, Wiley journals were indexed in 217 of 232 JCR subject categories. Of these, 24 Wiley journals achieved a top category rank, with 240 titles within the top ten of their subject category.

Wiley’s portfolio continues to be strong across both science and social sciences with Wiley journals accounting for the largest share of journals, citations and articles across 14 categories. In the Social Science JCR Wiley journals accounted for the second largest proportion of journals and citations overall.

The prestigious Reviews of Geophysics (published on behalf of the American Geophysical Union) increased its Impact Factor by 42% to 14.800 – placing it firmly at the top of its subject category. Ageing Cell is also first in the Geriatrics and Gerontology Category with an Impact Factor of 6.340

Another successful story for the Advanced Materials journal family in 2015 with Advanced Materials Impact Factor increasing 14% to 17.493; Advanced Materials continues its top ten rankings in six different ISI subject categories. Advanced Functional Materials strengthens its standing as a leading full-paper general materials science journal with its further increased 2014 Impact Factor of 11.805. Advanced Optical Materials received its first ever Impact Factor of 4.062 while Advanced Energy Materials continues its commitment to publish premier energy-related studies with a third Impact Factor of 16.146.

Journal of Communication saw a 52% increase from 2.076 to 3.160, placing it in the number one spot in the Communication category.

83% of the journals published out of our Asia-Pacific offices now have an Impact Factor including the following top ten ranked journals: International Journals of Mental Health NursingDrug and Alcohol Review, Australian Grape and Wine Research, Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics, Reviews in Aquaculture, Geriatrics and Gerontology International, Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources and Regulation and Governance.

Impact Factors are a metric that reflect the frequency that peer-reviewed journals are cited by researchers, and are often used as a tool for evaluating a journal’s quality.

Highlights in Physical Sciences:

Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering (4.925) now tops all four categories in which it is listed: Computer Science, Interdisciplinary Applications; Construction & Building Technology; Engineering, Civil; and Transportation Science and Technology. Other publications to rank at number one in their category this year include Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews – Computational Molecular Science (11.885) which continues to lead the Mathematical and Computational Biology category with a 31% increase, International Journal of Robust and Nonlinear Control (3.176) is the number one title in the Mathematics, Applied category (also fourth in the Automation & Control Systems category) and International Journal of Energy Research  in the Nuclear Science & Technology category (2.418).
Navigation achieved its first Impact Factor, a respectable 0.562 as did Energy Technology with an Impact Factor of 2.824. Journals with notable increases in Impact Factor growth includeParticle & Particle Systems Characterization (+474% / 3.081), Biofactors (+53% / 4.592), Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry (+45% /3.318), Fuel Cells (+35% /2.080), Annalen der Physik (+205% /3.048), International Journal for Numerical Methods in Biomedical Engineering (+133% /2.052), and International Journal of Intelligent Systems (+133% /1.886).  Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics (+118% /2.305) now ranks at number four in the Engineering, Geological category.

Several journals continue to occupy leading rankings including Medicinal Research Reviews (8.482) which ranks second in Medicinal Chemistry and Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics (3.13) which is ranked second in the Mathematics, Applied category and third in the Mathematics category.  Mass Spectrometry Reviews (7.709) retains its number two position in Spectroscopy as does Advanced Synthesis & Catalysis (5.663) which continues its standing as second in the Applied Chemistry category.  Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series B (3.515) is ranked fourth in the Statistics & Probability category.

In chemistry, Wiley/Wiley-VCH publishes 45 journals in close relation with societies.  ChemPubSoc Europe represents 16 European Chemistry Societies. Its 11 journals saw a significant increase in citations, over 400% in the last ten Years. The Impact Factor of its flagship journal Chemistry – A European Journal remained above five for the ninth consecutive year, rising to 5.731 and its five-year Impact Factor of 5.635 is its highest ever score. The Impact Factor of ChemSusChem increased to 7.657; the highest score since the journal started publication in 2008.

The Asian Chemical Editorial Society (ACES) represents 13 major Asian Chemistry Societies. Its flagship journal Chemistry – An Asian Journal had its Impact Factor rise by 16 % to an all-time high of 4.587. Asian Journal of Organic Chemistry has received its first full (two-year) Impact Factor of 3.318. This is almost a 45 % increase over the partial Impact Factor from 2013 and shows how the AsianJOC has been embraced by the community in less than three years as a top organic chemistry journal.

Angewandte Chemie –the flagship journal of the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh, German Chemical Society) is on the rise. In 2014 more articles than ever were published (2,405), many more total cites were recorded (242,023) and a rising five-year Impact Factor (12.06; 2-yr: 11.261) demonstrates the leading role of the journal.

Highlights in Social Sciences and Humanities:

Wiley publishes 425 ranked titles within the Social Science JCR categories and 18% (75 titles) are ranked within the top ten of their respective categories, achieving 97 top ten rankings.  Wiley publishes the top ranked journal in five of the Social Science JCR categories, including Business, Finance; Psychology, Educational; Communications; Family Studies; and Substance Abuse.  Wiley titles received 14% of the citations in the social science JCR.

Three titles received an Impact Factor for the first time in 2014 including History and Theory, and Global Strategy Journal. History and Theory debuted in the top ten of the History category andGlobal Strategy Journal’s Impact Factor of 3.694 places it in the top 20 of the Management category.

Wiley’s Social Sciences and Humanities titles received several notable increases, including Journal of Communication which saw a 52% increase from 2.076 to 3.160, placing it in the number one spot in the Communication category. International Journal of Management Reviews saw a 44% increase from 2.673 to 3.857, landing it in the top ten of the Business category. Developing World Bioethics went up 41% from 1.457 to 2.054 and is now ranked second in the categories of Ethics and Medical Ethics. European Journal of Personality went up 51% from 2.213 to 3.347, it is now ranked fourth in Psychology, Social. Reading Research Quarterly increased by 74% from 1.650 to 2.884 entering the Education & Educational Research top ten at number six. Hastings Center Report saw a 56% increase from 1.080 to 1.684, placing it in the top ten in both the Ethics category and the Biomedical, Social Sciences category.

Highlights in Life Sciences:

Seventy-six journals in Life Sciences achieved a top ten ranking in 2014. Wiley publishes the top ranked journal in 11 of the Life Science JCR categories, including Geriatrics & Gerontology, Geochemistry & Geophysics, Paleontology, Biology, Fisheries Category, Biodiversity Conservation, Agronomy, Physical Geography, Ornithology Category, Limnology, Zoology Category.

Two Life Science journals have received their first Impact Factor this year, MicrobiologyOpen and Brain and Behavior.

Wiley’s Life and Earth Sciences titles received notable increases, including Conservation Letters which saw an increase to 7.241 and now ranked third in Conservation. Wildlife Monographs increased from 2.750 to 5.2 placing it in the number one ranking in the Zoology category. In the Physiology category Comprehensive Physiology increased to 5.739 from 1.688 and moving to eighth place ranking.  Land Degradation and Development increased in Impact Factor from 2.058 to 3.094, climbing to third place in the Soil Sciences subject category. Developmental Biology Impact Factor has risen to 3.689 from 1.414 and is now ranked eighth in the developmental Biology category.

Highlights in Health Sciences:  

Wiley’s Health Sciences division publishes 320 ranked titles, with 46 journals achieving a top-10% category rank. Both Journal of Advanced Nursing (1.741) and Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing (2.381) now appear in the top ten in Nursing. In the Veterinary Sciences category, three of the four top journals are Wiley journals including Transboundary and Emerging Diseases which is now the number one ranked journal in this category with an Impact Factor of 2.944. Addiction remains number one within the Substance Abuse category in the Social Sciences and number two within the Sciences with an Impact Factor of 4.738. Addiction Biology remains the number one journal in Substance Abuse category within the Sciences with an Impact Factor of 5.359.

Wiley is again the leading Publisher in Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Medicine with 24 of the 87 ranked titles, and five journals in the top ten in their category. Journal of Clinical Periodontology has increased its ranking to second in the category with an Impact Factor of 4.01. Clinical Oral Implants Research has moved up to third place, Periodontology 2000 is now fifth and Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research has moved to seventh in the category. International Endodontic Journal is now ranked ten, an improvement on its 2013 ranking of 16.

Of the 153 journals in the Medicine, General  & Internal category, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) is ranked 13, with a new Impact Factor of 6.032. The total number of times the CDSR was cited increased from 39,856 in 2013, to 43,592 meaning the CDSR receives the sixth highest number of citations in its category.

The journals published on behalf of the American College of Rheumatology are in the top five of the Rheumatology category. Arthritis Care & Research’s Impact Factor has increased to 4.713 ranking it fifth in the category. Arthritis & Rheumatology (indexed under its old title Arthritis & Rheumatism) is now ranked third out of 32 journals, achieving an Impact Factor of 7.764.

In the Health Policy Services category, Wiley has three of the top ten journals, Milbank Quarterly, Health Services Research and Health Expectations. The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society remains the number two journal in the Gerontology category with an Impact Factor of 4.572.

In Dermatology, Wiley has four journals in the top ten. This includes the British Journal of Dermatology which increased its Impact Factor to 4.275 and is now ranked sixth with 20,484 cites.

In the Nursing category, Wiley has seven journals in the top 20 and two in the top ten. This includes Worldviews in Evidence-Based Nursing which sits third and Journal of Advanced Nursing which is eighth in the Social Sciences.
