Meet the Editor: This paper is published in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, co-edited by Mark Baldwin and John Thuburn. Dr Baldwin will be hosting a “Meet the Editor” session at the American Meteorological Society Conference in Seattle on the 25th January.
