Wiley and National Geographic Society Launch Wiley Visualizing
New Image-Driven Textbooks Offer Affordable Alternative Approach to Learning
Hoboken, NJ, September 27, 2006 John Wiley & Sons., Inc. (NYSE:JWa) (NYSE:JWb), today launched Wiley Visualizing, a series of affordable and groundbreaking introductory texts that use a unique visual approach to maximize student learning. Developed in partnership with the National Geographic Society, the Wiley Visualizing series employs vivid images and diagrams, integrated with clear and concise text, to deliver a unique learning experience.
"Unlike other textbooks developed around a written manuscript, Wiley Visualizing's visual approach begins with the images, which are then integrated with concise text to convey facts, core concepts, processes, and principles," said Bonnie Lieberman, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Wiley's Higher Education business. "There is no better partner than National Geographic Society for such a series of cross-disciplinary, highly-visual textbooks. National Geographic is one of the world's foremost research and educational societies, renowned for their authoritative maps, photographs, graphics, illustrations, and videos."
Created with input from researchers at New York University, Arizona State, and Columbia University, Wiley Visualizing’s visual pedagogy is based on cognitive research to help students learn effectively. For example, each title includes pictorial essays such as "What a Scientist Sees" and verbal and visual assessment exercises like "What Is Happening in this Picture"? The Wiley Visualizing pedagogy shows students what the discipline they are studying is all about, instilling an appreciation for and excitement about the richness of the subject—an approach the National Geographic Society pioneered in its legendary magazine 118 years ago.
"For over 118 years, National Geographic has encouraged students to learn about the world around them," said Fran Downey, Vice President and Publisher of Content Literacy and National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic School Publishing Group. "We are excited to join Wiley in this groundbreaking series and unite our vast library of images to help students see what their instructors see, and feel the excitement their instructors feel for their subject. These books are more than beautiful—they transport students into the discipline."
In addition to responding to changing student learning styles, the Wiley Visualizing series addresses concerns over rising textbook costs. All the texts are priced 30% to 50% less than traditional texts. The series approach allows the texts to be rich in visuals yet streamlined in costs, so the savings can be passed on to students. Each title is offered with WileyPLUS, the online suite of teaching and learning tools such as videos, assessment tools, and study aids. The series’ unique visual approach is carried throughout all supplemental teaching and learning materials.
The initial Wiley Visualizing titles will introduce non-majors students to Environmental Science, Psychology, Physical Geology, and Human Biology, specifically:
Berg/Hager, Visualizing Environmental Science
Carpenter/Huffman, Visualizing Psychology
Murck/Skinner/MacKenzie, Visualizing Physical Geology
Ireland/Tanenbaum, Visualizing Human Biology
