Webster’s New World College Dictionary, Fourth Edition

Mike Agnes joined Webster’s New World Dictionaries in 1991 and has led the imprint as editor in chief since 1992. As editor in chief, Mr. Agnes oversees all new editions and revisions of most of the imprint’s major titles, including Webster’s New World College Dictionary and Webster’s New World Dictionary and Thesaurus.

Mr. Agnes has been a reference editor for nearly 30 years. He served four years as a linguist in the United States Army and subsequently pursued undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Connecticut and Harvard University. Working for Macmillan Publishing in New York City, Mr. Agnes was translation editor for the 32-volume Great Soviet Encyclopedia; edited and contributed to Collier’s Year Book and Health & Medical Horizons; edited a series of natural history field guides; served as the American review editor for Cassell’s bilingual dictionaries, London; and was chief lexicographer for Macmillan children’s dictionaries. He also worked for Cambridge University Press, where he was the U.S. reference editor, working on various general reference, linguistic and lexicographic projects.

Mr. Agnes is a member of the American Dialect Society, the Dictionary Society of North America, and Euralex (European Association for Lexicography). Currently, he is compiling a bilingual Russian and English dictionary of ornithology.
