It has come to our attention that a number of Wiley-Blackwell authors have recently been sent an email, purporting to be from Blackwell Publishing Ltd (please see text pasted below this message).
The text makes use of our trademark and the author claims to represent the editors-in-chief of Blackwell Publishing, but we would like to alert you that this email is not in any way connected with either Wiley-Blackwell or Blackwell Publishing Limited. It was not distributed by us and the e-mail address for response is not a Wiley or Blackwell e-mail address. We believe that the letter is a “Phishing” exercise where the sender seeks to collect personal information in order to use it for unauthorized purposes - probably from a Nigerian address known to have sent out a similar campaign to other academic publishers, with a view to obtaining a 'handling fee' from respondees.
We are currently investigating this, with a view to taking legal action against the senders if necessary. In the meantime, if you receive this email, our advice is as follows:
- do not respond to the sender
- do not provide your personal or work contact details or other information
- do not send money
- ask your IT security to block the cited URL, if possible
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact Susan Spilka, Director of Corporate Communications sspilka@wiley.com.
