Green Initiatives
“The many recycling and conservation initiatives that have been implemented on local levels at various Wiley locations around the world add up to one very impressive global movement! Colleagues place great importance on our environment and are keen to participate in external activities such as Earth Hour and Clean Up Australia Day, and using our recycling stations has become second nature."- Rebecca Sandercock, Print Services Manager, Wiley Australia, Brisbane
Colleagues at several Wiley locations around the world launched "Green Rooms," local volunteer teams whose members promote recycling, energy conservation, reduced paper use, and other environmentally friendly behavior in their local office. Additionally, the Green Rooms identify opportunities to engage colleagues in conversation about environmental issues, plan educational activities, and organize volunteer events.
Local Engagement
In many ways, the Green Rooms are supporting and helping to shape Wiley’s environmental priorities and projects by engaging colleagues in conversations about important topics and encouraging them to play active roles. Examples of local initiatives include:
- Supplying bins for shredding and recycling confidential documents and other waste paper;
- Promoting electronic communication of colleague news as a way to save paper and reduce waste;
- Enabling and encouraging recycling programs by ensuring each workstation has both a recycle bin and waste bin, and offering recycling for cardboard, paper, glass, batteries, and plastic at most Wiley locations;
- Donating out-of-print excess inventory of books to charitable organizations or local libraries, and recycling books that are not viable for donations;
- Replacing halogen lights with LED lights where possible;
- Partnering with Energy Star;
- Using green and socially responsible products such as bio-degradable dish and hand soap, non-bleached paper towels, wooden coffee stirrers, recycled office supplies, and Fair Trade tea and coffee in some locations;
- Eliminating Styrofoam and plastic cups and installing “one at a time” napkin dispensers and motion-sensor paper towel dispensers in cafeterias and lavatories;
- Offering lunchtime seminars on environmental issues;
- Setting copiers to duplex copying and encouraging double-sided printing;
- Eliminating unnecessary business travel; and
- Investing in video-conferencing and webcasting technologies.
