Interdisciplinary International Journal of the American Cancer Society
In August 2011, Dr. Raphael Pollock will end his second term as Editor-in-Chief of Cancer. The Search Committee of the American Cancer Society invites applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief for an initial 5-year term with a possible renewal term of 2-5 years. The new Editor-in-Chief will officially assume responsibility for the Journal in August 2011, but must be prepared to help facilitate the editorial transition beginning early Summer 2011.
Cancer is a bimonthly, peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing the practice of oncology worldwide by reporting novel and rigorous clinical research. Cancer has been the leading source of information on advances in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer for more than 60 years. Cancer publishes 5,515 pages of editorial text annually.
Candidates should be recognized as leaders in oncology with a broad background in basic science and clinical medicine. Candidates should also possess strong leadership qualities, intellectual vision, organizational abilities, and experience relevant to editing a leading medical journal. Candidates must hold an MD and/or PhD degree or equivalent, have a strong track record in oncology research and clinical care, and have a broad knowledge of the field of oncology and strong editorial experience with peer-reviewed journals as a section, associate, or sub editor. Significant familiarity with experimental design, the conduct of laboratory and clinical research, and judgment of the scientific validity and importance of research reports and review articles is highly desirable.
The Editor-in-Chief oversees the Cancer submission and peer review process and is responsible for the content, quality, and timeliness of each issue. Full editorial support is provided by the ACS journals staff. The Editor-in-Chief also helps to maintain and establish Cancer editorial policies and procedures as appropriate to reflect relevant changes in science, clinical practice, and medical publishing.
Interested individuals should submit an application package that includes:
- A curriculum vitae;
- A succinct letter of interest and qualifications, including addressing how the candidate will accommodate the time demands of editing the journal;
- A vision statement of 750 words or less for the next five years of publication of Cancer.
- A disclosure statement.
