Frequently Asked Questions
about The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice, 13th Edition

Q: Does the book/CD-ROM package contain everything that was previously in the binders?
A: Yes, all the information that formerly was contained in the complete, four-binder set is now enclosed in the one-book/CD package.

Q: What information is in the book and what is in the CD-ROM?
A: The single hard bound volume of the 13th edition contains new and updated subject matter previously included in the 12th edition loose-leaf volumes 1 and 2. The accompanying CD-ROM in the 13th edition contains current samples of all AIA contract documents which were formerly included in 12th edition loose-leaf volumes 3 and 4.

Q: What kinds of information does the 13th edition include?
A:
The content in the 13th edition is structured and arranged to reinforce the AIA "redefining the profession" theme. Subject matter is organized within four major sections that include Client, Business, Delivery, and Services. The Resources section contains updated appendixes for sources (organizations), an extensive glossary of terms, a guide to locating appropriate AIA documents, and several of the most widely-used AIA documents.

Q: How is the 13th edition different from the 12th edition?
A:
The 13th edition is different in both content and format. More than half of the material in the 13th edition is new. This includes sections that address the many dimensions of client-architect relationships and the kinds of expanded services that architects can offer to address client facility needs. The 13th edition presents this material in a more compact and convenient book/CD format.

Q: How does the CD-ROM work?
A:
The PDF formatted sample documents on the CD-ROM are accessible to all computer platforms (e.g., PCs, Macs, UNIX, etc.). These files can be opened by the free Adobe Acrobat Reader program. The "find" feature in Acrobat Reader permits users to readily search for key words in the document files. Users may also print out copies of any sample document for reference use.

Q: Does the CD-ROM allow me to create final contract documents?
A:
As with the contract documents that previously appeared in the 12th edition binders, the documents on the CD-ROM are samples for reference purposes. To purchase documents for use in actual agreements, customers can contact the AIA at 800-365-2724 or 301-987-1683.

Q: Will there be updates?
A:
Contrary to popular belief, there were no updates to the content of the previous Handbook (volumes 1 and 2). However, updates of the sample documents were made available through the AIA Documents Supplement Service. In its new format, the Handbook will continue to be updated approximately every 5 to 6 years. As in the past, readers can keep current on newly issued documents and document revisions through the AIA Documents Supplement Service. Please call 800-365-2724 or 301-987-1683 to get more information about the service or to subscribe to it.
