  • Description
This book helps teachers understand the attributes that lead to success for learning-disabled students, and provides the tools to foster these attributes in children. The book offers checklists to help determine the presence or absence of the Success Attributes in students, and offers activities and resources to “teach” the attributes.

The book is based on research conducted at the Frostig Center School, where former students were interviewed 10 and then 20 years after leaving the center.  The group contained both highly successful and less successful individuals.  Traditional thought that the more successful subgroup would have higher academic and cognitive levels did not prove accurate; however, several variables did surface from the analysis.  Those variables are termed “the Six Success Attributes” and are as follows: self-awareness, proactivity, perseverance, goal setting, presence and use of support systems, and emotional coping strategies.  Since these attributes impact an individual’s success, the educators at the school have implemented various lessons to teach the Success Attributes to subsequent students.  Many of these lessons have been collected in this guide.

Following the introduction and definition of the Success Attributes, the book presents scores of structured activities that address the attributes in LD students.  Each activity will contain a lesson plan with goals, materials, and procedures that include notes for teacher use.  After each lesson plan is a reproducible student worksheet.  Many of the activities will address several of the Success Attributes, but each will be placed in the chapter of the primary attribute it addresses (with cross-references to other attributes taught by the same activity).   Every activity will address possible modifications and caveats to accommodate a variety of learners.
