An updated and fresh perspective of the subject based on the concepts that the thermodynamic properties of a system are independent whether composition is specified in terms of formal components or molecular species and that the laws of thermodynamics are independent of the observational time-scale. ERNEST GRUNWALD, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at Brandeis University. Coauthor of numerous books and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, he has received many honors and awards for his work, including the Pure Chemistry Award of the American Chemical Society and Guggenheim and Sloan Fellowships.
