- This edition has primarily been revised using the comments and suggestions of teachers and students who have used the previous editions, but the author worked very hard to preserve readability as a feature that has made this text effective for eight editions.
- This text has been rewritten with a greater focus on the visualization of chemical particles in order to show a proper balance between the two essential aspects of chemistry, problem solving and visualization.
- In an attempt to increase interest and highlight special topics, several vignettes are dispersed throughout the text. The vignettes illustrate how chemical ideas are relevant to everyday life, including topics such as health, technology, the environment and society. These vignettes can easily be incorporated into class discussions.
- This edition incorporates a new approach of emphasizing chemical vision by using computer generated molecular model images via the internet. Instructors can use these images to introduce chemical ideas.
- An icon in the margin of certain chapters refers students to supplemental websites for additional study and teaching aids. Instructors can use these web supplements as teaching aids.
- A chapter on solids and liquids has been added and common organic chemicals are used in examples in various chapters rather than covered in a separate chapter. The chapter on nomenclature has been place close to the beginning of the text.
