RNL and Wiley are excited to announce the publication of “Net Zero Energy Design: A Guide for Commercial Architecture (Wiley, ISBN: 978-1-118-01854-5; $85.00; November 19, 2012) by Tom Hootman, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, an architect and the director of sustainability for RNL, an international architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, planning and urban design firm that specialized in sustainable design for the built environment.

Net Zero Energy Design” is a guide for architects and related construction professionals in designing and building commercially viable net zero commercial architecture.  The book focuses on application of net zero energy design principles in a variety of building types and scales.  It also offers practical strategies, step-by-step technical analysis, valuable examples, developed case studies, and numerous color graphics and photographs.  Tom Hootman, the book’s author, has worked on several net zero energy designed projects, including the 2011 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten winning U.S. Department of Energy’s Research Support Facility at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).  In “Net Zero Energy Design,” Hootman uses his expertise and experience to promote green building practices and share practical advice on net zero energy architecture for commercial buildings.  

Tom Hootman, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, is an architect and LEED Accredited Professional with over 19 years of experience. As Director of Sustainability, Hootman provides leadership and guidance to RNL’s sustainable project work, design standards, staff education, research and outreach. Hootman is the Past Chair of the Board of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), Colorado Chapter. He is an active leader in the building industry promoting green building practices. He regularly writes and speaks on green building issues at local, national and international venues, including a recent presentation titled Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) Singapore: A Case Study at the 2012 International Green Building Conference and an upcoming appearance at the 2012 Green Build Conference where he will present Achieving Net Zero at Scale.  Hootman is a passionate advocate for sustainability and is always seeking to inspire others and lead by example.
