Steven F. Lawson is professor of history at Rutgers University. His other books include Black Ballots (1976, 1998); In Pursuit of Power (1985); Debating the Civil Rights Movement (1997, 2006) with Charles Payne; and Civil Rights Crossroads (2004). He is coeditor of the series “Uncovering the Past” for Wiley-Blackwell (with Nancy A.
