The coastal zone is a transition area between land and the open ocean where considerable amount of human, physical, and natural processes interact. Human activities may impact not only on the environmental resources but also on each other. In addition, major natural events can strongly damage human settlements. In such a context, the need for an integrated coastal management has been expressed in many countries and at different scales for the last thirty years. The Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) process involves needs of data, information, scientific project, and high level of expertise and training. At the same time, technological developments in remote sensing, GIS, global positioning system, numerical models, and automatic cartography have provided opportunities for environmental studies. But the use of GIS and associated technologies, well suitable for terrestrial processes, is quite problematic in coastal zones. Coastal GIS covers progresses concerning several topics drawing on the experience of several experts and practitioners. It illustrates the different stages of GIS implementation (inventory, analysis, and management applications) for coastal zone management.
