The European Journal of Immunology (EJI) is an immunology research journal, focusing on various aspects of immunology including, but not limited to:

Basic Basic/Clinical studies
Innate immunity Immunity to infection
Adaptive immunity Allergy and inflammation
Leukocyte and lymphoid organ ontogeny Immunodeficiencies and autoimmunity
Molecular immunology and signaling Transplantation and tolerance
Tissue immunology and leukocyte trafficking Tumor immunology
New technology Immunomodulation and Immune Therapies

Established in 1971, the Journal has been serving the needs of the immunology community worldwide with objective enthusiasm. While mechanistic insight, which helps us better understand the workings of the immune system is of great importance for EJI, we are also interested in studies that contain thought-provoking immunological findings. EJI is the official journal of the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS).

EJI’s fast and fair review policies

Fast review

Our fast review process means you won’t be scooped and your results will reach the community rapidly.

  • Extra fast review can be requested if you know that there is a competing group about to publish data similar to yours
  • EJI’s policy of essential, not extensive revisions, means a shorter revision time and faster time to acceptance
  • Out-of-scope/low priority manuscripts: Authors are informed within 7 days
  • Average time from submission to first decision: 21 days
  • Average time from accept to online publication (Accepted Article): 5 days

Fair review

Our fair review process means your paper receives the attention that it deserves by immunologists who are experts in the field.

  • EJI’s Executive Committee are leading immunologists (See EJI Editorial Board)
  • Two editors assess every manuscript submitted; if there is any difference of opinion, a third editor’s opinion is sought
  • EJI reviewers should only ask for essential, not extensive revisions, and not “nice to have” experiments that don’t change the conclusions of the paper; paramount for EJI is that a manuscript details solid, reproducible science that supports the claims being made.
  • If an EJI reviewer has been too demanding, you are encouraged to disagree with such requests by addressing this in a point-by-point response providing that solid scientific reasons for why the requested changes are unreasonable are given
  • EJI considers confirmatory studies, including recently scooped papers, providing that the data are solid and use a different approach, thus adding weight to the confirmation
  • EJI considers preliminary studies using only a couple of different approaches rather than a full story provided that the data are interesting and generate insight into a valid, hypothesis-driven question
  • EJI does not require full mechanistic insight but rather significant insight into the field investigated and solid data that support the conclusions drawn
  • EJI publishes the editorial correspondence and reviewers’ reports online as Supporting Information (See an example of the peer review correspondence here)

Clinical studies

EJI’s editorial team understands the experimental restrictions of clinical/human studies.

  • EJI considers descriptive clinical papers without a mechanism, provided that the studies are hypothesis-driven with a clear rationale and informative results
  • EJI’s editorial board features many clinical experts who help assess clinical studies
