At the cusp of a rapid expansion, clinically, academically, legally and politically, the field of personality and mental health is an emerging area of research that currently covers three distinct literatures: DSM-IV/ICD-10 defined personality disorders, psychopathy and offending behaviour.

Providing leadership in this new, emerging field, Personality and Mental Health: Multidisciplinary Studies from Personality Dysfunction to Criminal Behaviour will define more clearly, not merely react to, the field and disciplines involved in research into personality and mental health and for the first time unite the three literatures.

Through its multi-disciplinary and service orientated approach, Personality and Mental Health will provide an authoritative source of information for researchers, practitioners and policy makers working in the field of personality and mental health.

The Journal seeks to encourage exchange amongst individuals and groups working in the field, as well as debate amongst opinion formers and policy makers in this high profile area. It will also seek to encourage innovation and provide a platform for the publication of new approaches to treatment, assessment and service delivery.

The journal will publish:

• two issues in 2007, rising to four issues in 2008
• a clinical case in each issue, with invited commentary by, for example, lawyers, ethicists, service users etc.
• reviews and original research articles including rapid communications
• a correspondence section as the journal becomes established
• a limited book review section, expanding as demand dictates

The scope of the Journal will encompass the following:

• Service evaluation and development: including the evaluation of current treatment and assessment protocols, classification and aetiology, the development and trialling of innovative interventions including psychological, psychiatric, pharmacological, social care and self-management and the review and development of delivery models and services.
• Organisational evaluation and development: including assessment of the organisational capacity of service units and the working practices of staff, the impact of different organisational strategies on the type, level and quality of services delivered.
• Law, policy and ethics: including review and critical analysis of new criminal justice, social care and Human Rights legislation and its application to people with personality disorders and the analysis of policy developments.
• Research methodology, research practice and dissemination: including the development of innovative methodologies and research practices targeting hard to reach and over-researched groups and innovative as well as standard methods of dissemination.
• Education and training: including professional, service user and carer education and training and wider curriculum development.
