The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism
Published on behalf of the American Society for Aesthetics
Edited by:
Susan L. Feagin
The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism publishes current research articles, symposia, special issues, and timely book reviews in aesthetics and the arts. The term aesthetics, in this connection, is understood to include all studies of the arts and related types of experience from a philosophic, scientific, or other theoretical standpoint. The arts are taken to include not only the traditional forms such as music, literature, landscape architecture, dance, painting, architecture, sculpture, and other visual arts, but also more recent additions such as photography, film, earthworks, performance and conceptual art, the crafts and decorative arts, contemporary digital innovations, and other cultural practices, including work and activities in the field of popular culture.

Special Issue - 65.1: Global Theories of the Arts and Aesthetics
The objective of this collection is to see if Western theories of the arts and aesthetics can be enriched and extended to accommodate various concepts and practices in the arts around the globe. The strategy is to look at individual concepts in specific cultural traditions, without attempting to be comprehensive. Some topics addressed are virtuosity and its limits in traditional gong musical performance of the Vietnamese central highlands; Gamelan competitions in Bali that take on some of the trappings of sport; Hindu notions of an aesthetics of sex; the role of movement and changing perspectives in Islamic architecture; Confucian views about calligraphy as an expression of one's character; and how Shikinen Sengu, the rebuilding cycle of a Japanese Buddhist shrine, challenges certain ideas about the ontology of architecture.
