The Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society publishes original papers on systematic and evolutionary botany and comparative studies of both living and fossil plants. Review papers are also welcomed which integrate fields such as cytology, morphogenesis, palynology and phytochemistry into a taxonomic framework. The Journal will only publish new taxa in exceptional circumstances or as part of larger monographic or phylogenetic revisions.

New classification for flowering plants and land plants
In the latest issue of the Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society (October 2009), a consortium of botanists have produced a new classification for all flowering plants (Angiosperm Phylogeny Group Classification - APG III) and for all land plants. In the same issues, other papers provide a revised linear sequence for the families of flowering plants recommended for use in herbaria and other botanical collections and a revised infrafamilial classification for three families of monocots most affected by the new classification presented in APG III.

Top 10 species from 2008
Each year The International Institute for Species Exploration names the Top 10 new species of the previous year. Whilst the top ten list for 2008 is mainly dominated by non-plant species, the two new plant species to be featured on the list were both published in Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society.
