The primary purpose of the Journal of Small Business Management (JSBM) is to publish scholarly research articles in the fields of small business management and entrepreneurship. As the official journal of the International Council for Small Business (ICSB), the JSBM is recognized as a primary instrument for projecting and supporting the goals and objectives of this organization, which include scholarly research and the free exchange of ideas. The journal, which is circulated in 60 countries around the world, is a leader in the field of small business research.

In March 2006, the Journal of Small Business Management earned the distinction of having the highest percent increase in total citations from January 1995 to December 2005 in the field of Economics & Business. According to current ISI Essential Science Indicators database statistics, this journal's record includes 309 papers cited a total of 766 times to date.

JSBM is also ranked among the top journals in Business by Financial Times.

On June 1, 2009, Dr. George T. Solomon was named as new Interim Editor of JSBM. Dr. Solomon is a Past- President and current chair of the Wilford White Fellows of the ICSB and a Past- President and Justin G. Longenecker Fellow of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE). Dr. Solomon has published and edited over 130 articles, books of readings, book chapters, reference materials and proceedings articles in both the areas of Entrepreneurship/Small Business Management and Organizational Behavior & Dynamics, and was recently awarded as the Outstanding Paper Award Winner at the Literati Network Awards for Excellence in 2009.
