Special Issue: The 6th European Workshop on Periodontology Contemporary Periodontics is available!
For the sixth time in 15 years, the European Academy of Periodontology (EAP), a standing committee of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) invited teachers and researchers in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry to participate in the 6th European Workshop on Periodontology (6th EWP). Seventy-three colleagues travelled to the Charterhouse at Ittingen in the Canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, to spend 5 days in the seclusion of the monastery and to discuss controversial and pertinent issues of 'Contemporary Periodontics'.
Such an academic event can only take place if all participants contribute with their full enthusiasm and engagement. It is, therefore, our privilege to acknowledge the enormous work of our colleagues before the workshop and the complete devotion during the sessions.
Moreover, the EAP wishes to acknowledge the generous financial support of the 6th EWP by Straumann AG, Basel, Switzerland. Without their spontaneous and no-strings-attached financial support as well as their professional help and interest this Academy could not have convened. Last, but not least, the Swiss Society of Periodontology SSP who continuously supported each of the past six workshops with both financial and moral support deserves a whole-hearted thank you note.
In five working sessions, the following major aspects were discussed, debated and consensus reached:
- (A)
Innovations in Periodontal Practice with position papers on 'Full mouth disinfection versus conventional staged debridement', 'Advances in power-driven instrumentation', 'Antimicrobial therapy in periodontitis', 'Cost-effectiveness for supportive periodontal care' and 'Lasers in non-surgical periodontal therapy'.
- (B)
Periodontal Tissue Engineering and Regeneration with position papers on 'Combinations of barrier membranes and grafting materials', 'Growth factors and biological mediators', 'Bioactive agents alone or in combination with grafting or GTR' and 'Treatment of gingival recession with coronally advanced flap procedures'.
- (C)
Critical Issues in Bone Regeneration with position papers on 'Clinical outcomes of dental implants placed in sites with lateral bone augmentation', 'Potential of growth factors for localized alveolar ridge augmentation', 'Success of sinus floor elevation and survival of implants inserted in combination with sinus floor elevation' and 'Vertical bone augmentation to enable dental implant placement'.
- (D)
Peri-implant Infections with position papers on 'Definition and prevalence of peri-implant diseases', 'Peri-implant diseases: diagnosis and risk indicators', 'Non-surgical treatment of peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis' and 'Surgical treatment of peri-implantitis'
- (E)
Periodontal Diseases and Health with position papers on 'Has the prevalence of periodontitis changed during the last 30 Years?', 'Prevalence and distribution of principal periodontal pathogens worldwide', 'Cardiovascular disease and periodontitis', 'Effects of diabetes mellitus on periodontal and peri-implant conditions' and 'Adverse pregnancy outcomes and periodontal disease'.
As a result of this intensive Academy, a total of 15 narrative and nine systematic reviews were discussed and scrutinized. This supplement of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology presents the revised and ammended, peer-reviewed versions of the 24 reviews and the five Consensus Reports of the Sessions A-E.
With an extremely efficient review process setting priority for early publication the EAP hopes to contribute with another monograph and putting periodontal practice on a solid scientific foundation. Owing to the generosity of Wiley Blackwell International Publishers, this supplement of the Journal of Clinical Periodontology will reach the interested reader within a few months of the Ittingen Workshop and, hence, the acquired knowledge will disseminate as fast as possible.
