Economics of Transition publishes high-quality, refereed articles on the economics of structural transformation, institutional development, and growth. It presents innovative theoretical work and econometric analyses of the process of economic reform and its macroeconomic effects. The journal aims to promote new thinking on how institutions and institutional change can be analyzed and measured and how their impact on aggregate economic performance can be evaluated. In particular, the journal seeks original empirical and theoretical analysis of the experience of the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe and the CIS, China and Vietnam, as well as enlightening studies of reform and institutional change in other emerging market environments, including India and those in Africa and Latin America. The journal publishes symposia and regular book reviews.

The Symposium on the East German Labour Market
Economics of Transition marks the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall with a symposium that provides micro evidence of significant challenges that still exist in the East German labour market. German reunification was an extraordinary political and economic event, and while, to a certain extent it can be described as a success story, marked differences in the economies of East and West Germany remain two decades after free movement between them was established. The five papers of this symposium analyse specific aspects of the experience of the East German labour market in the transition process. The papers range from the wage structure, the effectiveness of active labour market programs, internal migration and the role of social networks in the labour market success of migrants, to a study of the detrimental effects of the regulation of entry to specific occupations.
