International Association of the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disibilities

mencap (www.mencap.org.uk) is the largest UK voluntary organisation promoting the interests of people with intellectual disability/learning disability and their families.

mencap works through its individual members, its member organisations, its network of staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and its partnerships with other organisations, to:

  • Raise public awareness
  • Inform decision making nationally and locally
  • Provide information and advice
  • Improve the accessibility and quality of services

mencap services include:

  • Rights-base campaigns and policy guidance
  • Residential and housing and support services
  • A national information service and local community support
  • Further education, and employment and training
  • The JIDR and a monthly newsletter, 'Viewpoint'
  • Leisure oppportunities for people with learning disabilities

IASSID

The International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual Disabilities (mental retardation and related developmental disabilities) is an international and interdisciplinary scientific non governmental organization with official relations with the World Health Organization. It promotes worldwide research and exchange of information on intellectual disabilities. The association (originally named the International Association for the Scientific Study of Mental Deficiency) was founded in 1964 and has sponsored eleven World Congresses. IASSID is the first and only world-wide group dedicated to the scientific study of intellectual disability.
