TopAuthor Guidelines

Format of Submissions

Manuscripts of articles should be sent to the Editor, book reviews to the Book Review Editor.

Articles are not to exceed 30 double-spaced pages including notes and Works Cited (font size 12 pt throughout). MS must be submitted electronically (as a WORD e-mail attachment) and in duplicate hard (paper) copy to:

Dr. James Rolleston
Editor, The German Quarterly
Department of Germanic Languages and Literature
Box 90256
Duke University
Durham, NC 27708
e-mail: german.quarterly@duke.edu

Please also submit a 150-word abstract, in the same language as the article.

Submissions are welcome in English and German; submissions in German are encouraged.

Since the AATG editors send MSS out for anonymous review, authors should identify themselves on a separate cover sheet; the MS itself should contain no indication of the author's identity. Any references to the author's previous work should be written in the third person; these will be changed once a MS has been accepted.

All submissions must conform to MLA style (Notes separate from Works Cited). Authors must use the automatic endnote feature of Word. As with the body of the MS, notes and references must follow MLA style.

The word processor's features for italics and boldface should be used rather than underlining. Single spaces, not double, should be used after periods and colons. Long citations intended for set-down type may be double indented at the author's discretion. If they are not indented, they should be marked on a paper copy of the MS as quotes. AATG journals use two levels of section headings.

If permission for reproducing copyrighted material is required, the author should include such permission when submitting the final copy of the MS for typesetting. Any copyright-permission fees are the responsibility of the author.

Tabular materials must be aligned using tabs rather than the space bar. The table-generation options of word processors are acceptable. Authors who wish to use spreadsheet software for tables should correspond with the editor to determine software compatibility.

Editorial Policy

Only original material not published previously or simultaneously submitted for consideration elsewhere will be considered. Following notice of acceptance, the author will be asked to incorporate recommendations for changes in a final version.

All authors will be notified:

  • when a manuscript is received by the Editor and has been sent out for review
  • when a manuscript has been accepted, conditionally accepted, or rejected

Whenever possible, we will notify authors of acceptance or rejection within three months. All manuscripts that are resubmitted will undergo the same review process as new submissions. A copyedited version of an accepted manuscript will be sent to the author about 2 months before publication as an e-mail attachment and should be returned within 1 week of receipt. Page proofs will be send electronically as a pdf-files approximately 6 weeks before publication and must be returned within a few days.
