Manuscripts
The editors welcome articles on any aspect of public administration which meet our stated aims. Articles for the 'Main Articles' section and 'European Forum' should be 6-8,000 words long and should include a 150-word abstract. Articles for 'Public Management' and 'Review Articles' should be 4,000 words. 'Notes' should be no more than 2,000 words. Each copy should include (on a separate covering sheet) the number of words and the author's name, title, current address, email and telephone number(s).
Public Administration prefers authors to submit manuscripts online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/padm
Guidelines for how to use ScholarOne Manuscripts are also available on this website.
Submission online enables the quickest possible review and allows online manuscript tracking. Authors unable to submit online should contact the Editorial Office.
Format of files and attachments:
- Prepare your manuscript using a word processing program. Save it as a .doc, .rtf, or .ps file and supply tables and figures in a separate file. Files will be converted to .pdf files upon upload.
- Figure files saved as Word, PowerPoint, .gif, .jpg and .eps may be uploaded separately. These will be converted to small, manageable .jpg files upon upload. Please label each figure with the figure number.
Authors submitting online will be required to supply a completed Exclusive Licence Form before a manuscript can be published. All materials required by the printers will be requested by the Editorial Office at the appropriate time. Other aspects of manuscript preparation for online submission to the Journal must comply with the Author Guidelines detailed below.
Full instructions and support are available online from the submission site via the 'Get Help Now' button. You can also email for online submission support (support@ScholarOne.com). Please do not duplicate your submission by submitting online and by post.
The following should be supplied for each submitted manuscript:
- Covering letter of submission (giving the corresponding author postal, fax and e-mail addresses)
- The text (this must include the running title, abstract, main text, references, figure legends and tables in one file; tables must not be present as embedded files or pictures)
- Any figures (as Word, PowerPoint, .tif, .eps or .pdf files) (NB: for publication, only .tif or .eps files are accepted)
Rejected manuscripts are not returned. Manuscripts will be sent to referees for comment. In all cases the editor's decision will be final. Correspondence relating to previously published material is encouraged as long as its principal aim is to improve accuracy and refine or refute an argument.
Submission of an article means that it has not been published elsewhere, nor under consideration for publication elsewhere. Authors should, where necessary, obtain permission before including copyright material in their articles.
Proofs may be read and printer's errors corrected by authors provided they give an address at which they may be reached without delay, and email corrections and/or post corrected proofs, by first class mail or air mail, within five days of receiving them. With rare exceptions, printer's errors only will be corrected. Extensive alterations to articles will not be accepted, and authors are asked to ensure that their manuscript is in final form before it goes to Editorial Office.
Authors of articles receive a PDF offprint and one complimentary copy of the issue. Any additional, printed, offprints must be purchased (details are sent with proofs).
Style guidelines are available here. All submissions must be double spaced on one side of paper. Bibliographic references should follow the Harvard system, and notes should not be used. Contributors must adopt the house style for their manuscripts. Many queries can be answered by consulting standard texts such as: Hart's Rules for Compositors and Readers and The Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors (both Oxford University Press).
References in Articles
There are several software packages available to help authors manage and format the references and footnotes in their journal article. We recommend the use of a software tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.
EndNote reference styles can be searched for here:

Copyright Transfer Agreement.
Authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the CTA is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here. Please return all signed forms to:

NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services.
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
