TopAuthor Guidelines
1. Articles (two hard copies) should be sent to the editor:
Professor John Cottingham
Department of Philosophy
University of Reading
Reading RG6 6AA
UK
2. The article should begin with an Abstract (maximum 200 words).
3. The recommended length for articles for RATIO is between 5000 and 6000 words, including all notes and references. Longer papers are only very rarely accepted, and the journal has very little space for short 'discussion' pieces.
4. A covering letter should give the author's name and address (and email address for correspondence), but to facilitate anonymous refereeing no identifying information should be included anywhere in the article itself.
5. Authors of papers accepted for publication will be asked to prepare a final version (electronic and hard copy) following house style guidelines.
6. RATIO aims at a general philosophical readership. The inclusion of highly technical material, or an exclusive reliance on arguments designed for a narrow specialist audience, will greatly reduce the chances of acceptance.
7. The philosophical importance of the issues discussed should always be made clear at the start and/or conclusion of a paper. (The fact that a topic has been discussed in recent literature is not, in itself, enough to show that it is interesting or important.)
8. We prefer 'free-standing' pieces that develop the author's own philosophical perspective on the topic discussed, rather than papers devoted exclusively or predominantly to expounding or criticizing the positions of others.
9. We aim to get decisions back to authors within two or three months, but depending on individual referees this can take considerably longer. Feedback is normally provided, but this cannot always be guaranteed.
10. Book reviewing for RATIO is by invitation only (unsolicited book reviews will not be considered for publication). Books for review should be sent to the Editor at the above address.
11. Accepted authors will receive a PDF offprint of their final article after the issue is approved for press.
References in Articles
There are several software packages available to help authors manage and format the references and footnotes in their journal article. We recommend the use of a software tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.
EndNote reference styles can be searched for here:

Copyright Transfer Agreement.
Authors will be required to sign an Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the CTA is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Copyright Agreement Transfer does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here.
NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services.
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthors for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
