General

NEW: Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics is covered by Blackwell Publishing's Early View service.

Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication.

The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.

The Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics only accepts online submissions. Please submit your manuscript online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jvpt. Once you have submitted your paper, you will receive a confirmation email, which will include your manuscript reference number; you can log onto the system at any time to track the progress of your manuscript.

If you have problems with your submission, please contact the Editorial Office.

Manuscript presentation
The Journals language is English. The original manuscript should be formatted with double line spacing using the letter type Ariel or Times Roman (12 pt) with continuing line numbers from the title page onwards. Line numbers are also requested for manuscripts submitted as PDF-files. Symbols (including Greek letters) have to be noted and explained with a separate list of abbreviations preceding the manuscript. Abbreviations should be defined in a footnote the first time they are used.

The title page should contain the full title and a short running title, author's full name(s), present affiliation, and address for correspondence, email address of the corresponding author, and the fax number.

The abstract should not exceed 200 words and should include a list of 5 keywords.

The main sections should follow the general outline of a scientific paper, starting with an Introduction, Materials and Methods, followed by Results and Discussion, acknowledgements and references. These sections might be divided into sub-sections where appropriate.

Tables and figures
Tables and figures (including original images) should be presented on separate pages at the end of the manuscript, each with a clear (self-explaining) legend. Tables and figures should be referred to in the text together with an indication of their approximate position (mark with colour).

Authors must pay to have their figures reproduced in colour. If you wish to have figures in colour please contact the Editors.

Preparation of Electronic Figures for Publication: Although low quality images are adequate for review purposes, print publication requires high quality images to prevent the final product being blurred or fuzzy. Submit EPS (lineart) or TIFF (halftone/photographs) files only. MS PowerPoint and Word Graphics are unsuitable for printed pictures. Do not use pixel-oriented programmes. Scans (TIFF only) should have a resolution of 300 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings) in relation to the reproduction size (see below). Please submit the data for figures in black and white or submit a Colourwork Agreement Form. EPS files should be saved with fonts embedded (and with a TIFF preview if possible).

For scanned images, the scanning resolution (at final image size) should be as follows to ensure good reproduction: lineart: >600 dpi; half-tones (including gel photographs): >300 dpi; figures containing both halftone and line images: >600 dpi.

Further information can be obtained at Blackwell Publishing's guidelines for figures: http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/illustration.asp.

Abbreviations and Terminology
Spelling should conform to that of standard dictionaries (e.g. The Concise English Dictionary, Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary). Style should conform to that of standard manuals of English usage. Authors who are not fluent in English should seek skilled advice on the composition of their manuscripts.

Units of measurement, symbols and standard abbreviations should conform to those recommended by the International Union of Bio-Chemistry (IUB) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). Metric measurements are preferred, and dosages should be expressed entirely in metric units (SI units).

References
The reference list should be in alphabetical order and include the full title thus:

  • Eddy, R.G. (1977) The use of cloprostenal in the treatment of no visible oestrus and cystic ovarian disease in dairy cows. Veterinary Record, 109, 62-65.
  • Moe, G.K. & Abildskov, J.A. (1980). Antiarrhythmic drugs. In The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics. 6th edn. Eds Gilman, A.G., Goodman, L.S. & Gilman. A. pp. 683-704. Macmillan, New York.

References in the text should cite the name of the author followed by the year of publication, e.g. (Brown, 1978). When reference is made to a work by two authors, both names should be given, e.g. (Brown & White, 1978): for three or more authors, the first name followed by et al. should be used, e.g. (Brown et al., 1978). Authors are responsible for the accuracy of their references.

We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.

EndNote reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp
Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.refman.com/support/rmstyles.asp

Short Communications
These should differ from full papers on the basis of scope or completeness, rather than quality of data. They may report significant new data arising from problems with narrow, well-defined limits, or important findings that warrant rapid publication before broader studies are complete. The text should neither exceed 1500 words nor be divided up into conventional sections. To aid rapid publication the Editors may undertake responsibility for correcting proofs. When submitting short communications, authors should make it clear that their work is to be treated as such.

Reviews
The Journal welcomes reviews providing an updated state of the art on topics associated with Veterinary Pharmacology, Veterinary Therapy and Veterinary Toxicology. It is however recommended that authors who are planning or preparing larger review-type articles should contact the Review Editor for detailed information.

Proofs
The corresponding author will receive an e-mail alert containing a link to a website. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Corrections must be returned to the Production Editor within 3 days of receipt; authors are requested to fax corrected proofs and minor corrections can be advised by email ensuring that the journal title, paper reference number and corresponding author name are quoted in the body of the message.

Page charges
No page charges are levied on authors or their institutions.

Free copies and offprints
The corresponding author will be supplied with a free final copy of their paper as a PDF file. Offprints may be purchased at prices determined by the Publisher by returning the form sent with the page proofs.

Copyright
Papers are accepted on the understanding that they have not been and will not be published elsewhere. Authors may wish to consult an appropriate member of the Editorial Board prior to submission. It is a condition of publication that authors grant Blackwell Publishing Ltd the exclusive licence to publish all articles including abstracts. Papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless the exclusive licence to publish has been granted. To assist authors, a Copyright Transfer Agreement is available from the editorial office or by clicking here. Authors themselves are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
