TopAuthor Guidelines

Authors should send TWO COPIES of papers to be considered for publication to:

Mrs Helen Baldwin
Editorial Assistant
Philosophical Investigations
Research Institute
School of Arts and Humanities
Keir Hardie Building
Swansea University
Singleton Park
Swansea SA2 8PP
UK

All manuscripts should be accompanied by a short abstract of the paper. Books for Review should also be sent to the Editorial Assistant at the above address. Manuscripts submitted will not be returned. On acceptance, authors will be asked to provide a final version of their paper electronically (preferably in Word), together with a hard copy. Authors should ensure that the final version is carefully checked for spelling, punctuation and referencing.

Contributors will receive a free PDF offprint of their article, and a hard copy of the issue in which it appears.

Submission of work to Philosophical Investigations is taken to imply that the same manuscript is not under consideration by another journal. If the manuscript submitted forms part of a book currently in press, please note at the time of submission specifying: details of the book's publisher; its projected publication date; and the precise relationship between the material in the submitted manuscript and in the book.

Authors will ordinarily be required to assign copyright in their contributions to Philosophical Investigations to the publisher, Blackwell Publishing Ltd,
although these arrangements can occasionally be varied in exceptional cases.

Submissions should conform to the following stylistic requirements:

(a) Spelling and punctuation: The American 'z' spelling should be avoided (organise, epitomise etc.). UK spelling throughout.

(b) Footnotes should be numbered consecutively. Authors may either:
i) employ footnotes of the traditional sort, containing all bibliographic information within them;
or else
ii) collect all bibliographic information into a reference list at the end of the article, to which readers should be referred by footnotes (NOT in-text
references) of the form 'Rhees (1998: 2-3)'.

(c) Bibliographic information should be presented in the following format: citations in the text should be author name and date: Habermas (1976, 68) or
Habermas 1976, 68). And in the reference list at the end of the text should be in the following form:
Habermas, J. (1976). Legitimation Crisis, trans. Thomas McCarthy. London: Heinemann.
MacKinnon, C. A. (1982). 'Feminism, Marxism, Method and the State'. In N. O. Keohane, M. Z. Rosaldo and B. C. Gelpi (eds.), Feminist Theory: A
Critique of Ideology
. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, pp. 1-30.
Rawls, J. (1958). 'Justice as Fairness'. Philosophical Review 67: 164-94.

In references, spelling should follow the original.

There are several software packages available to help authors manage and format the references and footnotes in their journal article. We recommend the use of a software tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.

EndNote reference styles can be searched for here:

Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here:

Copyright Transfer Agreement

Authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the CTA is a condition of publication and papers will NOT be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the CTA for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here. Please return all completed and signed forms to:

NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/ for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.

Early View
Philosophical Investigations is covered by Wiley-Blackwell's Early View service. Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.

Pre-submission English-language editing
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/english_language.asp. All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.
