TopAuthor Guidelines

Tellus publishes articles, short contributions and correspondence. Authors submitting a contribution do so on the understanding that the work has been read and approved by all authors and that no similar paper, other than an abstract or preliminary report, has been or will be submitted for publication elsewhere. Short contributions should not exceed 4 printed pages. Correspondence is intended for discussion of papers published in Tellus and should not exceed one printed page.

Copyright. The submission of a manuscript means that the authors agree to assign exclusive license to Blackwell Munksgaard if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication. The work must not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the Tellus Editorial Office. Articles published in Tellus are protected by the exclusive license, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in Tellus. No material published in Tellus may be stored on microfilm or videocassettes or in electronic databases and the like without the written permission of Tellus. However, Tellus does not require that permission be obtained from the Editorial Office for the use of tables and figures published in Tellus, provided that the source be appropriately cited. The Exclusive License Form can be found at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/teb_elf.pdf

Manuscripts. Tellus encourages online submission of manuscripts at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tellus. To submit a paper, authors should log onto the Author Center. Submission online is an intuitive, step-by-step process. By submitting online, you will benefit from quicker peer-review, web-based manuscript tracking, online reviewing and faster response. Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts as a PDF with both text and figures embedded. Manuscripts can also be submitted in MSWord, RTF and PostScript format. A PDF file will then automatically be created for reviewing purposes. Full instructions and support for authors can be found at the Site. To use the Site you will need a user ID and password. Go to the Journal's submission homepage (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tellus) and click 'Create a new account' if you have not registered before, or click 'Check for existing account' if you have submitted online or reviewed online before for the Journal (or if you have forgotten your details).

Please suggest 5 potential reviewers (names, email addresses and fax numbers). Authors should enclose a covering letter detailing the corresponding author's postal address, e-mail address and fax/phone numbers.

LaTeX/MS Word submission. Manuscripts should be prepared using the Tellus class file (click here) and the preferred software formats are LaTeX or MS Word (versions 6/95 to 2000). With the class file you can use the natbib.sty style file to cite references. A sample LaTeX file is provided: tellsamp.tex. It is recommended that files intended for peer review should be submitted one-column, double-spaced in a larger font.

Illustrations. Authors are encouraged to upload figures to the Tellus ScholarOne Manuscripts website as PDFs, for reviewing purposes (see above under Manuscripts). When a manuscript has been accepted for publication, authors will be asked to supply electronic versions of the figures. These should be supplied as EPS or TIF files. Each complete figure should be placed in a separate file. If your figures are half-tones/photographs, please save them in Tagged Image File format (TIF) at 300 d.p.i. (at reproduction size). Save line figures in Encapsulated Postscript format (EPS), or failing that as TIF files (when they should be saved at 800 d.p.i. if possible). EPS format produces the best quality image when figures are downsampled to produce a PDF file for Wiley-Blackwell's online platform. Line figures saved in other formats may be difficult to understand after they have been reduced in size. Combination figures can be saved in either EPS or TIF (at 800 d.p.i.) format. Colour figures should be saved in CYMK rather than RGB. Avoid using tints if possible; if shading is essential to the understanding of the figure, try to make it coarse. Authors will also be asked to prepare high quality originals. Prints of drawings should be about twice the final size (width: max 28 cm, min 14 cm; height: max 34 cm) with lettering large enough to remain clearly legible when reduced. Maps should preferably be oriented so that the meridian through the centre of the drawing is parallel to the sides. Figure legends should be self-explanatory and typed on a separate sheet of paper. They should also be typed below each figure on all copies. All figures should be numbered consecutively and mentioned specifically in the text by number. Guidelines on the preparation of artwork are available from: http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/illustration.asp.

Units, abbreviations and symbols. The 'Système International dUnités' (SI units) should be used. However, the units hPa and mb are accepted. Only standardised terms which have been generally accepted should be used. Unfamiliar abbreviations must be defined when first used. Particular care should be taken to ensure that all symbols are clearly identified.

Abstracts. An abstract of not more than 200 words should be provided.

References. Articles should be fully documented with references in the text and reference listings grouped alphabetically by authors names at the end of the paper. The order for references to articles is: author(s), year, title of article, abbreviated title of journal (italics), volume number (bold), first and last pages; and for articles in book form: author(s), year, title of article, title of book (italics), editor(s) (in brackets), publisher, city of publication, first and last pages. Titles of journals should be abbreviated according to International list of periodical title word abbreviations (International Standard 833-ISO). References to unpublished manuscripts or manuscripts in the submitted stage cannot be allowed.

Supporting Information. Authors are welcome to submit additional 'Supporting Information', such as data sets or additional figures or tables. This material will not be published in the print edition of the journal but it will be viewable via the online edition. Such part of the Supporting Information should be referred to in the text as, for example, 'see Appendix S1 in Supporting Information'.

Supplementary files are hosted by the Publisher in the format supplied by the author and are not copy-edited by the Publisher. It is the responsibility of the author to supply supporting information in an appropriate file format and to ensure that it is accurate and correct. Extensive editing of material is not possible at this stage and the author has the responsibility to ensure that material is sent in a correct form at the time of submission.

Authors should include a 'Supporting Information' section immediately after their References section, which should be in the following form:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Supporting Information
Additional supporting information may be found in the online version of this article:

Appendix S1 Short title of supplementary appendix S1*
Appendix S2 Short title of supplementary appendix S2

Please note: Wiley-Blackwell is not responsible for the content or functionality of any supporting materials supplied by the authors. Any queries (other than missing material) should be directed to the corresponding author for the article.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note: If authors supply links to their own web sites, the Publisher is not responsible for the material on these sites.
*Only short titles to appendices should be given in this section; full titles can be given with the Supporting Information itself.

Proofs. The corresponding author will receive an email alert to download an PDF (portable document format) file of the proof. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding printers errors, will be charged to the author separately.

Proofs should be returned to:

Information about charges for colour figures can be obtained from the Tellus Editorial Office (tellusb@misu.su.se). Invoices for page charges will be sent from the Editorial Office in Stockholm.

Offprints. Corresponding authors will be provided with electronic offprints of their paper. Paper offprints may be ordered at prices quoted on the order form which accompanies proofs, provided that the form is returned with the proofs. The cost is more if the order form arrives too late for the main print run. Offprints are normally dispatched within three weeks of publication of the issue in which the paper appears. These will be charged in GBP by Blackwell Publishing. Request forms for offprints will be sent out with the proofs.

NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services.
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/ for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.

OnlineOpen
OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With OnlineOpen the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley InterScience, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive. For the full list of terms and conditions, see http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/authorresources/onlineopen.html#OnlineOpen_Terms.

Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the payment form available from our website at:
http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/TEB_OOF.pdf

Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen if you do not wish to. All OnlineOpen articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.
