MANUSCRIPTS
Authors are encouraged to inspect a recently published issue of Boreas in order to see the construction and style of the manuscripts.
Manuscripts should be written clearly and concisely and confirm to the general style of the journal. The text should be written consistently in British (UK) English. Authors are responsible for the text and those unfamiliar with English are encouraged to seek the help of a competent linguist prior to submission (see below).

PRE-SUBMISSION ENGLISH-LANGUAGE EDITING
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/english_language.asp. Japanese authors can also find a list of local English improvement services at http://www.wiley.co.jp/journals/editcontribute.html. All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
All manuscripts should be submitted to Boreas electronically: Visit http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/boreas and follow the instructions. If you require technical assistance with ScholarOne Manuscripts (formerly known as Manuscript Central), you will find details of how to contact ScholarOne Support directly by clicking the GET HELP NOW link that appears at the top of every ScholarOne Manuscripts page. Alternatively, please contact the Editorial Office by telephone or by e-mail. Please note that the total size of submissions should not exceed 80MB. Images can be compressed by using the LZW compression available in software like Irfanview or ACDSee etc.

RAPID PUBLICATION
If you would like to arrange for rapid publication of your article, please contact the Editor for more details.

PREPARATION AND ORGANISATION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Articles must be double-spaced and allow for good margins throughout. Insert the page number in the top right-hand corner of each page. The first page should give the title of the article and the name(s) of the author(s) followed by the Abstract (without heading). Keywords, the names of the authors, e-mail addresses (in this format [...@...]), affiliation(s) and addresses in italics follow below the Abstract. The main body of the text should start on the next page (without heading).

Please note that the Abstract should be submitted as part of the manuscript as well as being entered into the box specified on ScholarOne Manuscripts.

Illustrations - Illustrations should be reducible to a maximum size of 17.0 × 22.3 cm, or for the column width of 8.3 cm. Intermediate widths may be used, but avoid figures between 12.7 and 17.0 cm. Colour illustrations are permitted provided the author bears the cost. Please download the colour cost agreement form from http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/BOR_CWAF.pdf and send to the Production Editor at: Production Editor - Boreas, Blackwell Publishing, 101 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 3ES, UK upon acceptance of your article. In the event that an author is not able to cover the costs of reproducing colour figures in colour in the printed version of the journal, Boreas offers authors the opportunity to reproduce colour figures in colour for free in the online version of the article (but they will still appear in black and white in the print version). If an author wishes to take advantage of this free colour-on-the-web service, they should liaise with the Editorial Office to ensure that the appropriate documentation is completed for the Publisher. Please read our figure preparation guidelines on this page for more information on our preferred formats and advice on using LZW compression to ensure that the file sizes are manageable. A charge of £25 per page may be applied to excessively long manuscripts. Boreas does not print plates. All halftones will be printed at their proper place in the text. Consequently, all illustrations should be termed figures, even if occasionally covering an entire page, and the items of composite figures should be designated A, B, C, etc. (not a, b, c, etc.).

ONLINE OPEN
OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With OnlineOpen the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley InterScience, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive. For the full list of terms and conditions, see http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/authorresources/onlineopen.html#OnlineOpen_Terms
Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the payment form available from our website at: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/BOR_OOF.pdf
Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen if you do not wish to. All OnlineOpen articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.

AUTHOR SERVICES
Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services. This enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit
http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/ for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.

ONLINE EARLY
Boreas is covered by Blackwell Publishing's Online Early service. Online Early articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue and will also be included in PubMed as "epub ahead of print" at this stage. Online Early articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Online Early articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Online Early articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article. To receive an e-mail alert once your paper has been published, please see http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/email_alert.pdf.

AUTHOR MATERIAL ARCHIVE POLICY
Please note that unless specifically requested, Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted two months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the production editor as soon as possible.

OFFPRINTS
A PDF offprint of the online published article will be provided free of charge to the corresponding author, and may be distributed subject to the Publisher's terms and conditions. Paper offprints of the printed published article may be purchased if ordered via the method stipulated on the instructions that will accompany the proofs.

PROOFS
The corresponding author will receive an e-mail alert containing a link to a web site that contains the proof. A working e-mail address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read the PDF file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following web site: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately.
