Papers should be in clear concise English. They should not exceed 6000 words of text (10 printed pages) though longer papers may be accepted if they are of exceptional merit. Papers submitted must not have been published or accepted for publication by any other journal.
The name and full postal address and email address of the author to whom readers should address correspondence and offprint requests should be given on the first page; this will appear as a footnote in the journal and the publishers will send proofs to this author unless contrary instructions are written on the manuscript.
Recent issues should be examined for details of acceptable style and format. Manuscripts should preferably be sent as e-mail attachments. The text should be organised in the journal format and submitted as an attached Word file. Tables must be on separate sheets, should be self-explanatory, and should not be ruled up. Figure legends should be grouped together on a separate sheet. In the full-text online edition of the journal figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure. Figures should be submitted as one or more Word files (but not embedded in text) or as PDF files. Alternatively three hard copies of each manuscript may be submitted. The text should be double-spaced and Authors should retain a copy of all material.
Figures should be of publishable quality and be submitted about twice their printed size, labelled with stencilled or preprinted lettering (large enough to allow reduction), and numbered serially. Photographs, in the form of glossy prints, are acceptable for half-tone reproduction when they are a real contribution to the text; authors may submit them mounted in layouts to fill the printed page if they wish. Colour plates are printed by special arrangement only.
When data are expressed as means, whether in figures or tables, some indication of their distribution about the mean should be given. The same data should not be given in both tables and figures.
References should conform to the 'name-and-date' system; titles of periodicals must be given in full in the list of references at the end of the paper.
The title of the paper should be informative but preferably not exceed twenty words. A short title (for page headlines) of not more than forty letters should also be supplied. Taxonomic affiliation and authority for the principle species involved in the paper should be given in the Abstract and at the first mention in the text, not in the title. The paper should include a self-contained abstract of less than 250 words, to follow underneath the title. Authors should provide a maximum of ten keywords.
Disks
The journal welcomes submission of accepted manuscripts on disk which should supplied as a Word document. An accurate hardcopy must accompany each disk, together with details of the type of hardware used, the software employed and the disk system, if known. Do not justify. Particular attention should be taken to adhere exactly to the journal style in all respects. See Journal style sheet for further details. Disks will not be returned to authors.
Preparation of electronic artwork
We would like to receive your artwork electronically in addition to hard copy. Please prepare your figures according to the publisher's Electronic Artwork Guidlines.
• Create EPS files for images containing lineart. EPS files should be saved with fonts embedded (and with a TIFF preview if possible). The following packages can be used to create EPS files: Adobe Illustrator 7.0 and above, Deneba Canvas 6.0 and above, CorelDRAW 7.0 and above, SigmaPlot 8.01 and above. Other programs may also be able to create EPS files - use the SAVE AS or EXPORT functions. EPS files can be produced from other applications (e.g. PowerPoint, Excel) BUT results can be unpredictable (e.g. fonts and shading not converted correctly, lines missing, dotted lines becoming solid).
• Create TIFF files images containing half-tones/photographs. For scanned images, the scanning resolution (at final image size, see above for a guide to sizes) should be as follows to ensure adequate reproduction: lineart, >800 d.p.i.; half-tones, >300 d.p.i. Figures containing both halftone and line images, >600 d.p.i. The following programs can be used to create TIFF files: Adobe Photoshop 4.0 and above, Adobe Illustrator 9.0 and GraphPad Prism 3. Other programs may also be able to create TIFF files - use the SAVE AS or EXPORT functions.
• Black and white images should be supplied as 'grayscale'; colour images should be supplied as CMYK.
• Multipart figures should be supplied in the final layout in one file, labelled as (A), (B) etc
• Supply figures at final size widths if possible: 19 picas (single column) or 40 picas (double column)
• Use sans serif, true-type fonts for labels if possible, preferably Arial or Helvetica, or Times (New) Roman if serif fonts required.
• Ensure all lines and lettering are clear.
Early View
Physiological Entomology is covered by Wiley-Blackwell's Early View service. Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article. More information about DOIs can be found at: http://www.doi.org/faq.html.
Colour work agreement forms
It is the policy of Physiological Entomology for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Wiley-Blackwell require you to complete and return a Colour Work Agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact the Production Editor at: Pen@Oxon.Blackwellpublishing.com and they will be able to email or FAX a form to you. Once completed, please return the form to the Production Editor at the address below:

*To read PDF files, you must have Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you do not have this program, this is available as a free download from the following web address: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Offprints
The corresponding author will receive a PDF file of the article free of charge. Additional offprints may be ordered from offprint@cosprinters.com
Exclusive Licence Form
Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various medium/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office.
Please click here to download a copy of this form.
Proofs
The corresponding author will receive an email alert containing a link to a web site. A working e-mail address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following web site: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Hard copy proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately.
Author material archive policy
Please note that unless specifically requested, Wiley-Blackwell will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted 2 months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the editorial office or production editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so.
Author Services
Online production tracking is now available for your article through Wiley-Blackwell's Author Services. Author Services enables authors to track articles--once they have been accepted--through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated emails at key stages of production so they do not need to contact the production editor to check on progress. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/ for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including faqs and tips on article preparation, submission, and more.
OnlineOpen
OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With OnlineOpen the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley InterScience, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive. For the full list of terms and conditions, see http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/authorresources/onlineopen.html#OnlineOpen_Terms.
Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the payment form available from our website at:
http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/phen_oof.pdf
Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen if you do not wish to. All OnlineOpen articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.
