TopAuthor Guidelines

Manuscripts must represent original work that has not been previously published in any print or electronic medium. If the copyright to any previous version of the essay is held by any publisher, professional association, agency, or person other than the author, that fact should be brought to the attention of the editor when the essay is submitted. If any material copyrighted by another author or agency is extensively quoted or included in the manuscript (for example, a prose excerpt of more than 300 words from a published work, a poem, or a statistical table), it will be the author's responsibility to secure permission to republish the copyrighted material if the manuscript is selected for publication in the Journal of Religious Ethics. Manuscripts sent to the Journal of Religious Ethics should not be simultaneously under consideration by another publisher.

Length:

The Journal of Religious Ethics prefers essays under 10,000 words. Because of space limitations, manuscripts exceeding 10,000 words (including text, references, tables and figures) will be considered only if authors provide adequate justification for the length.

Quantity:

Manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate to the editorial offices at Florida State University:
Journal of Religious Ethics
Department of Religion
Dodd Hall M05
Florida State University
Tallahassee, FL 32306-1520

Please type or print at least one copy using one side of the paper only. Two copies may be (but are not required to be) photocopies utilizing both sides of the paper, thus reducing postage costs for the author and the journal.

Title Page:

In addition to the author's name and the title of the paper, the title page should include the author's institutional affiliation, preferred mailing address, and telephone number (unless these are provided in a cover letter). In cases in which the essay is not typed or printed in standard 10-pitch (courier) type which yields 250 words to the page, the title page should also show the total word count of the essay.

Anonymity:

Manuscripts are evaluated by members of the editorial board and other scholars with appropriate expertise. Because the JRE review process is blind (referees are not supposed to know the identity of the author), the author's name should appear only on the title page of the manuscript submitted; the title page should be detachable (do not photocopy page 1 or the abstract on the reverse side), and the author's name should not appear on the pages of text. Please avoid writing references and notes in a way that discloses your identity.

Abstract:

Please include an abstract of the essay. This abstract, which should be no longer than 140 words, should be printed or typed double-spaced on a single page immediately following the title page.

Returns:

The JRE is not able to return the copies sent out to referees; the original copy retained by the editor during the refereeing process will be returned only if the author provides a self-addressed envelope with adequate postage.

Electronic Files:

Manuscripts may be submitted electronically to the JRE email address (jre@admin.fsu.edu), but need to be followed up by two paper copies. The JRE style guide may be requested from the editors.
