TopAuthor Guidelines

Acceptance
The publication of papers is subject to the approval of referees.

Languages
Accepted language is English. If this language is foreign to the author(s), consult a competent person (see Pre-submission English-language editing). The metric system should always be used (SI-units).

Manuscript Submission
All material to be considered for publication (including figures) must be submitted via http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/geoa. The manuscript must contain double spaced text and show running line numbers. Manuscripts should be written in British or US English.

A complete manuscript for a normal article consists of the following items (in the order they appear):

One Manuscript file containing:
- Title
- Author(s) name
- Affiliation
- Abstract (not exceeding 250 words)
- Main text (c. 6 000 words, 1.5-2 line spacing, single column, running line numbers) including conclusions/summary and acknowledgements (if any)
- Complete name(s) and address of the author(s) including e-mail address
- List of references (correctly formatted, see below)
- Tables, in consecutive order (one per page)
- Figure captions, in consecutive order
Separate files containing each figure in EPS, TIFF or PDF format

Abstract and summary
An abstract in English (not exceeding 250 words) should accompany each article.

Headings
The editor will decide levels of headings, (max 4). The author should clearly indicate the desired order of headings.

Italics
Italics are used for species in Latin and for specially stressed words or sentences in the text and, in the reference list, for authors' names and regularly appearing journal titles.

Abbreviations
Avoid abbreviations except for those commonly accepted, such as e.g. m, km, m a.s.l.. Do not use abbreviations in titles, headings and figure captions.

Equations
Equations should be numbered sequentially with Arabic numerals; these should be ranged right in parentheses. All variables should appear in italics. Use the simplest possible form for all mathematical symbols.

Footnotes
Footnotes are undesirable, and should be, in general, amalgamated with the text (if necessary in parenthesis). Longer pieces of note material may be separated from the main text as inserted paragraphs in smaller type.

Reference system
For references in the text the 'Harvard system' should be used. It is demonstrated in the following examples: Schulze (1964a, p. 16-17) and (cf. Schulze 1964b, p. 12 and 96; Müller 1962, p. 232; Schmidt 1962, p. 835-389; Pl, IV. Fig. 2).

Reference list
For examples of reference formats, see any published journal article or the following examples. Note the details of punctuation. Page numbers should be given for beginning and end of papers, or for the total number of pages in a textbook, a report etc:

Ahlmann, H. W., 1924: Le niveau de glaciation comme fonction de l'accummulation d'humidité sous forme solide. Geografiska Annaler, 6: 223-272.

Ahlmann, H. W., 1953: Glacier variations and climatic fluctuations. American Geographical Society, Bowman Memorial Lecture, Ser 3. New York, 51 p.

Tables
Tables should be as simple as possible. They must be numbered Table 1, Table 2 etc. and additional text should follow en suite after the table number (which should be placed above the table).

Illustrations
For detailed information on figure preparation and standards please see the instructions here.

Illustrations should be submitted digitally along with the manuscript. The accepted formats are PDF, EPS (for either line art or combinations of photographs and labelling) and TIFF (photographic images). Do not embed figures in a Word document.

Illustrations requiring a special quality of paper, or colours, and large folded illustrations can not be accepted unless all extra costs are carried by the author.

Laboratory data
When results of laboratory work are presented in the manuscript, such as 14C ages, relevant laboratory data should be given (name and address of the laboratory, procedure, material studied etc.).

Page charges
There are no page charges for papers in black and white. All colour pages are subject to mandatory page charges. Colour illustrations can be reproduced online free of charge, however these illustrations should be readable and understandable in grayscale in the printed version.

Exclusive Licence Form
Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here

New: Pre-submission English-language editing
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscripts professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/english_language.asp. All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.
