INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Seminars in Dialysis is an independent, peer-reviewed, bimonthly journal devoted to reviews of clinical topics in the field of dialysis and related areas. Authors should strive for brevity. Most articles are expected to be from 4,000 to 6,000 words (plus references). If a larger article is required to cover a topic, consideration should be given to narrowing the focus of the piece. (Two 5,000 word articles are generally preferable to one of 10,000 words). If the author of the article has done work in the area reviewed, overemphasis of this work should be avoided.

It is recommended that one or more individuals not familiar with the area discussed review the manuscript and offer suggestions on improving the clarity of presentation.

Copyright Transfer Agreement

Copyright Transfer Agreement - Authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the CTA is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Copyright Transfer Agreement does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various medium/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form here.

Publication in the journal is subject to the condition that the article (as a whole or in part) has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. In submitting the manuscript to the publisher, the author certifies that neither the author's contribution nor any text or figures procured and included by the author infringes upon the rights of a third party, and that the author alone is authorized to dispose of the existing right of utilization. The author will refrain from any other duplication and distribution or digital transfer and reproduction (e.g., on the Internet) during the period of the contract.

Note to NIH Grantees
Pursuant to NIH mandate, Wiley-Blackwell will post the accepted version of contributions authored by NIH grant-holders to PubMed Central upon acceptance. This accepted version will be made publicly available 12 months after publication. For further information, see www.wiley.com/go/nihmandate.

Procedure for Preparation and Submission of All Manuscripts:

Manuscripts must be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief. All manuscripts must be submitted on 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper. The entire manuscript must be single column with margins no less than 1 inch wide and double-spaced throughout (including footnotes, references, figure legends, and tables). Manuscripts should be arranged in the following order: title page (including gifts of material, grants and sources of support), references, figure legends, tables, and clearly labeled figures. Number all pages consecutively beginning with the title page. References, tables and figures are to be numbered consecutively and cited in order of appearance in the text. Alternatively, you may email your manuscript to sherman@umdnj.edu.

Please note that Word 2007 is not yet compatible with journal production systems. Unfortunately, the journal cannot accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents until such time as a stable production version is released. Please use Word's 'Save As' option therefore to save your document as an older (.doc) file type.

For submissions to Supplement for the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology, please submit the papers to the ScholarOne Mansucripts site at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/asdin.

Authors for Whom English Is a Second Language:

Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission or during the review process. Authors wishing to pursue a professional English-language editing service should make contact and arrange payment with the editing service of their choice. For more details regarding the recommended services, please refer to http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/english_language.asp.

Abstract:

An abstract or summary must be submitted on a separate page. It must not exceed 250 words in length and must be acceptable for use without revision by abstracting services.

Reference Style:

In the interests of readability, authors of articles referred to in the review should not be mentioned in the text except where essential. For example, 'Prophylactic doses of furosemide appear to prevent renal failure in this model (1).' is preferrable to 'Studies by Smith et al. (1) have shown that prophylactic doses of furosemide...'. Each reference receives its own number; '1A' is unacceptable, for instance. The numbers of the references should be enclosed in parentheses on the line of writing within the narrative. A citation should be listed as 'in press' if it has received final acceptance from a journal or book editor; articles that are in review or that have been conditionally accepted pending revision should be treated as 'personal communications' or 'unpublished data' and should not be added to the references. All authors should be listed whenever possible. Abbreviations for journal titles should follow The List of Journals Indexed in Index Medicus, available at www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/serials/lji.html. The following examples demonstrate correct style:

  • Journal articles: Scholz H, Kurtz A: Endothelium derived relaxing factor is involved in the pressure control of renin secretion from the kidneys. J Clin Invest 91:1088-1091, 1993
  • Books: Aggarwal BB, Gutterman JU: Human Cytokines: Handbook for Basic and Clinical Research. Cambridge, Blackwell Science, Inc., 1992
  • Articles in books: Weidner N, Buckalew VN Jr: Sickle cell anemia, sickle cell trait, and polycythemic states, in Renal Pathology (vol 2), edited by Tisher CC, Brenner BM, Philadelphia, JB Lippincott Company 1989, pp 1417-1436
  • Abstracts: Flower RJ: The mediators of steroid action, (abstract) Nature 320:20, 1986

We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting. EndNote reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp

Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.refman.com/support/rmstyles.asp

Tables:

Tables should be typed double-spaced on separate sheets with the number and title of each table flush left at the top of the table. Do not use vertical lines in tables. Superscript footnotes to tables should also be double-spaced and in alpha order (a, b, c, etc.); do not use symbols or numbers.

Figures:

There are three preferred formats for digital artwork submission: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), Portable Document Format (PDF), and Tagged Image Format (TIFF). We suggest that line art be saved as EPS files. Alternately, these may be saved as PDF files at 600 dots per inch (dpi) or better at final size. Tone art, or photographic images, should be saved as TIFF files with a resolution of 300 dpi at final size. For combination figures, or artwork that contains both photographs and labeling, we recommend saving figures as EPS files, or as PDF files with a resolution of 600 dpi or better at final size. More detailed information on the submission of electronic artwork can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp

Permissions:

Previously published figures, tables and other material submitted to Seminars in Dialysis for publication require permission from the copyright holder (usually the publisher) to be reproduced. In addition, the permission of at least one author of the previously published material is required. Permission fees and the cost of any color illustrations must be borne by the authors. Forms for obtaining such permission are available from the Editorial Office.
