Instructions to Authors
Manuscripts should be submitted at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/SJMSS. Instructions for using the system can be found on the site. Furthermore, an author guide is available in the "User Tutorials'"area of the site if assistance is needed.
Manuscripts can be submitted as either "original" or "review". In addition, book reviews, abstracts of sports medicine interest, and announcement of consensus statements or meeting reviews and other topics of interest can be submitted to the "sports medicine update" section.
The submission should include a cover letter stating that the manuscript contains original material only that has not previously been published, and is not currently under consideration elsewhere, nor will be submitted elsewhere until a final decision has been made by the journal.
Please note that if there is colour artwork in your article, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a Colour Work Agreement Form before your article can be published. Click here to download the form as a PDF.
Copyright Transfer Agreement
Authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) (Please note: The Copyright Transfer Agreement asks you to note who publishes Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports. In that field please write 'Blackwell Publishing on behalf of John Wiley & Sons A/S') for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the CTA is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. (US Federal Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission, authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). The signed CTA should be sent to:

When preparing manuscripts for submission, authors should follow the style of the journal:
1. Manuscripts should be divided into: Title page (including contact name and address including phone, fax and e-mail, and with a title not exceeding 120 characters and a running head of not more than 45 characters), Abstract (less than 200 words), Key words (3-8 words other than those mentioned in title or abstract), Introduction, Materials and methods (including statement that informed consent and local ethics committee approval has been provided for human studies), Results, Discussion, Perspective, Acknowledgements (if any), References*, Tables, Figure legends and Figures. Units should be SI and metric.
2. It is mandatory that all manuscripts include a brief perspective paragraph at the end of the discussion in which the findings are put into perspective in the relevant area of sports medicine. This includes reference to possible previous articles in this and other journals and the potential impact of the present findings. This paragraph should not exceed 200 words.
3. As a general rule, no more than 40 references should be cited in a full text original article (120 in reviews). References* should be cited in alphabetical order, regardless of chronology, and without numbers. In the text references should include the authors and the year of publication in parenthesis, e.g. (Saltin, 1998), except when the authors name is part of the sentence, e.g."Saltin (1998) showed that...". When several references are cited together they should be in chronological order, separated by semicolons. When a referenced article is written by two authors both names should be included; for three or more authors the first name only is given, followed by "et al.". Unpublished material may be referred to sparingly in the text, by giving the author's name and initials followed by "unpublished observation" or "personal communication"; it should not appear in the list of references. References should be written in accordance with Index Medicus (e.g. Messner K. Meniscal regeneration or meniscal transplantation? Scand J Med Sci Sports 1999: 9: 162-167). References to book material should include book title, author, editors, publisher, publication year, and pages.
4. Tables should be typed on separate sheets numbered with Arabic numerals, and have self-explanatory headings.
5. Figures should have a title, be accompanied by a legend on a separate sheet and be self-explanatory.
Author material archive policy: Please note that unless specifically requested, Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted three months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the editorial office or production editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so.
Proofs. The corresponding author will receive an email alert containing a link to a web site. A working e-mail address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following web site:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.
This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Hard copy proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately.
The Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports is covered by Blackwell Publishing's Online Early service. OnlineEarly articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. OnlineEarly articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of OnlineEarly articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so OnlineEarly articles cannot be cited in the traditional way .They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.
Online production tracking is available for your article through Blackwell Publishing's Author Services. Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production so they don't need to contact the production editor to check on progress. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.

Page Charges
Any article which exceeds 6 printed pages (in the final published version) will be charged. Excess pages, over and above 6 printed pages, must be paid for at a rate of GBP 95 per page. Review papers are as a rule not charged for excess pages, but should not exceed 10 printed pages. A printed page contains about 5,400 letters on average, space between words included (but not tables and figures).
