TopAuthor Guidelines

Articles may be submitted in English, French, or German, and should be accompanied by a short abstract in English and at least five keywords.

Arabian Archaeology and Epigraphy has now adopted ScholarOne Manuscripts (formerly known as Manuscript Central), for online manuscript submission and peer review. The new system brings with it a whole host of benefits including:

  • Quick and easy submission
  • Administration centralised and reduced
  • Significant decrease in peer review times

From now on all submissions to the journal must be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/aae. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. If you require assistance then click the 'Get Help Now' link which appears at the top right of every ScholarOne Manuscripts page. If you cannot submit online, please contact the Editor in the Editorial Office at the following address:

Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere and has been read and approved by all authors. The submission of the manuscript by the authors means that the authors automatically agree to assign exclusive copyright to Blackwell Publishing if and when the manuscript is accepted for publication. The work shall not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in the journal. No material published in the journal may be stored on microfilm or videocassettes or in electronic databases and the like or reproduced photographically without the prior written permission of Blackwell Publishing.

Manuscripts should be double-spaced. To facilitate the handling of submissions, texts and figures must be uploaded as separate files (text in Word, along with a PDF copy if unusual characters and diacritical marks are used; figures in high resolution TIFF, EPS or JPG). Please insert a page break between the title page and the main text. On the title page, please include the names of the author(s) and the institution(s) to which they are affiliated, as well as any abstract and keywords.

Contributors are asked to use the following scheme of transliteration of Arabic:
Epigraphic North and South Arabian should follow the system for Arabic above except that g should be used instead of g, and the s1, s2, s3 notation is preferred for the nonemphatic unvoiced sibilants.

North West Semitic languages should be transliterated according to the ASOR system [see BASOR 222 (1976):82].

When the letters t, d, h are italicized, the letter in the text should be ringed and a note made in the margin indicating ''italic+underline''.

Any graphs, line-drawings, or halftones should be referred to as Figures in the text. Please mark and highlight figure cues within the text , indicating the approximate position of each, for example [Insert Fig. 1 here]. Figure captions should be listed on a separate page of text at the end of the manuscript. All figures should be clearly marked and labelled.

Any colour illustration must be paid for by the author. Current rates will be quoted by the publisher on application. Original transparencies plus two sets of colour prints should be submitted.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Embedding Fonts
If you have used diacritics or special characters which may not appear on computer that do not have those fonts installed, please follow these instructions:
For PC Users:
You must embed your fonts within the word document which you upload as part of your submission. Guidance on how to do this in Microsoft Word 2003 and 2007 can be found here.

For Mac Users:
Having prepared your text file in Microsoft Word or an alternative word processor, please save a copy in PDF format and upload this in addition to your original Word document. Please designate this additional file as 'PDF Document'.

Tables should be submitted in a separate file, and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Their approximate position in the text should be indicated by a cue and highlighted.

References The Harvard system should be followed (except where frequently-used sources are abbreviated: in this case, a full list of abbreviations should precede the bibliography: see below). In the text, references should be indicated by giving the author's name and year of publication (with page and illustration references). For example:

... Clark (1967: 23) was of the opinion that ...

... it therefore represents a variation of a comb technique seen in a Grooved Ware context at Marden (Wainwright 1971: 212).

The references should be listed in full at the end of the paper in the following form: (Individual items should be separated by clear lines, with author' names capitalised, and the year of publication followed by a colon).

a) Journal article

Modderman, P.J.R. 1971. Bandkeramiker und Wandernbauerntum. Archaologisches Korrespondenzblatt 1: 7-9.

b) Book

Martin, R, 1981. Tacitus. London: Allen & Tate.

c) Article in a book

Wormald, F. 1978. Bede, Beowulf and the conversation of the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy. Pages 96-117 in Farrell, R.T. (ed.), Bede and Anglo-Saxon England (Oxford, BAR Brit. Ser. 46).

But for some subject areas, where standard abbreviations for some much-quoted books and periodicals are in common use, these abbreviations may be employed in text, footnotes, or bibliography, and they should be listed separately before the bibliography.

Please note

(i) If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a, b, c, etc should be added to the year of publication (1972a, 1972b, etc).

(ii) The use of the phrase et al. to indicate multiple authorship is permissible in the text. In the list of references, the first three authors plus et al. should be used. Full page numbers should be supplied, not just ff.

(iii) Volume and plate numbers in references should be given in Arabic, and lower case used for fig., pl. However, refer to your own figures as Figure 1, 2, 3, etc).

There are several software packages available to help authors manage and format the references and footnotes in their journal article. We recommend the use of a software tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.

EndNote reference styles can be searched for here:

Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here:

Proofs The corresponding author will receive an email alert containing a link to a website. A working email address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following website: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Additional offprints can be ordered on the offprint form accompanying the proof.

The journal is responsible neither for loss or damage to mailed manuscripts nor for the opinions of contributors.

Copyright Transfer Agreement

Authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the CTA is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). Authors may like to download a copy of the form here. Please return your completed form via post to Arabian Archaeology and Epigraphy Production Editor, 600 North Bridge Road, #05-01 Parkview Square, Singapore 188778; via fax to +65 6511 8288; or via email to AAE@wiley.com.
