Online Manuscript Submission Now Available
Please submit your manuscript to Journal of Phytopathology online via our new manuscript submission website. The online manuscript submission and review process promises to lead to faster submission to first decision times and greater simplicity for authors and reviewers

1. General Scope

The Journal of Phytopathology publishes original scientific articles, short communications and review articles on all aspects of phytopathology on the population, organism, physiological, biochemical and molecular genetic level. Particularly, the journal scope is on the nature of biotic and abiotic causes of plant diseases, the mechanisms and potential to induce losses and the means to control diseases. Accepted papers should advance the conceptual knowledge on plant diseases, rather than presenting descriptive or screening data unrelated to biological mechanisms or functions. Manuscripts presenting results from unrepeated experiments or data with no or inappopriate processing will not be accepted. Authors are encourated to look at past issues of the Journal of Phytopathology to verify that a paper is appropriate for the journal.

2. Submission and Acceptance of Manuscripts

2.1 English-language editing
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/english_language.asp.

All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.

Important note: Eligibility of manuscripts for the review process requires English language quality according to the international scientific standards.

2.2 Online submission
Manuscripts should be submitted electronically via the online submission site ScholarOne Manuscripts (formerly known as Manuscript Central) . For assistance, contact:

Dr. Sabine von Tiedemann
Journal of Phytopathology
Editorial Office:
E-mail: stiedem@gwg.de

When using ScholarOne Manuscripts, please, note the following:
- Provide the names and (working) email addresses of at least 4 potential international reviewers. Proposed reviewers are required to be familiar with the scientific topic of the submitted manuscript, internationally recognized and to operate in a different institution and/or country than the authors.
- With your personal password you can access the 'Author Center' in ScholarOne Manuscripts any time to check the status of your manuscript.
- Revised manuscripts must be uploaded within 2 months of authors being notified of conditional acceptance.

3. Requirements for Manuscripts

3.1 Manuscript Format and Organization

Manuscripts should be uploaded as Word or Rich Text Format files (see also sample manuscript ). In addition, high-resolution figure files (see below) are requested to be submitted as separate files. All files will be automatically converted to a PDF document upon upload and will be used for the review process. Lines must be numbered throughout the main document. Use double spacing for lines.

Please do not load PDF to ScholarOne Manuscripts.
Please do not send write-protected text.
Please do not use automated or manual hyphenation.
Please do not embed tables or figures into the main document.

Short Communications and Original Articles must include Heading, Keywords, Abstract, Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion and References. In a Short Communication Results and Discussion sections should be merged to one chapter. Review Articles comprise an abstract followed by Introduction and a running text structured in a suitable way according to the subject treated. A final section with conclusions may be added. Before preparing and submitting a review article authors should contact the Editor-in-chief.

Tables and figure captions are added in the same file at the end of the main document. Maximum length (including tables and figure captions) for different types of contribution or parts of the article are the following: Short Communication - 1500 words, Original Article - 12000 words, Review Article - on personal arrangement with the editor, Abstract - 300 words (150 words for Short Communications), Short Title (Running Head) - 60 characters.

The heading of an article includes a short title (running head), followed by the name of the institution where the research work was mainly carried out (italicized), the title, the authors' names and the authors' addresses including the e-mail address of the corresponding author. Please provide given names in full for all authors.

Manuscripts must conform to the journal style. Manuscripts not complying with the submission format will be unsubmitted and returned to the author.

3.2 Units, Abbreviations and Nomenclature
All measurement specifications must follow the S.I. system. Other abbreviations should only be employed if they are recognised internationally. All biological and chemical terms used should be according to the current international nomenclature. Substances or reagents obtained commercially, when first mentioned in the text, must include the name and address of the manufacturer or supplier. Only botanical and zoological terms in Latin are printed in italics. The full name must be provided when first used in the article.

3.3 Tables and Figures
The number and size of tables and figures should be kept to a minimum. Each table and figure must have a reference in the text. Numbering of tables and figures must follow their order of appearance in the paper. Captions of figures and table headlines should give a precise description of the content and be self-explanatory.

Tables should be created using the table function. Graphs with x and y axes should not be enclosed in frames (only 2-dimensional representations should be used).

Line drawings should only be contour drawings without halftones (shades of grey). Please do not use patterns; rough hatching is possible.

Please note that figures will generally be reduced in size to fit within the column-width or the print area. Numbering, labeling and scale bars on figures, photographs or micrographs must still be readable at reduced size.

Colour figures
Colour figures
can be reproduced in black and white (with possible loss of contrast). Figures to be printed in colour are charged at £150 plus VAT for the first figure. All subsequent figures are charged at £50 each plus VAT. Manuscripts including colour figures require submission of the Colour Work Agreement Form . To avoid any confusion please send the Colour Work Agreement Form and indicate whether you want the figures to be printed in black and white.

Submit your figures as EPS (lineart), JPEG or TIFF (halftone/colour graphs) files only. MS PowerPoint and Word Graphics are unsuitable. Figures (and scans) should have a minimum resolution of 400 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings).

Detailed information on digital illustration standards is available at: http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/illustration.asp

Check your electronic artwork before submitting it: http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/eachecklist.asp

3.4 References
References in the text should be cited by author and date (Harvard system), e.g. (Johnston and Jones 1997). More than two authors are referred to as follows (Boerema et al. 1986).

Reference to unpublished research work is referred to in the text as e.g. (T. Adams, personal communication). Reference to accepted publications or to papers in press may require the author(s) to provide the manuscripts or the link to access the paper if pre-published online.

At the end of the paper, references should be listed alphabetically according to the first named author. The following formats should be used:

3.5 Supplementary Information
Supplementary Information, such as data sets or additional figures or tables, that will not be published in the print edition of the journal, but which will be viewable in the online edition, can be submitted separately.

The presentation of Supplementary Information should be indicated in the main manuscript by a paragraph, to appear after the References, headed 'Supplementary Information' and providing titles of figures, tables, etc. The Supplementary Information is an integral part of the article and will be included in the review process accordingly.

4 Author Services
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/ for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.

5 After Acceptance of your Manuscript

5.1 Copyright Assignment and Colour Work Agreement
Authors of accepted papers will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement Form (CTA). Signature of the CTA is a condition of publication and papers will not be forwarded to production unless an original, handwritten signed form has been received.

Please send original forms to the following mailing address:

Professor Andreas von Tiedemann
Department of Crop Science
Plant Pathology and Crop Protection Division
University of Göttingen
Grisebachstr. 6
37077 Göttingen
Germany

Please note that signature on the CTA does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details).

A completed Colour Work Agreement (CWA) form must also be signed and submitted with the revised manuscript if the manuscript contains colour illustrations. CWA must be submitted for any manuscripts containing colour illustrations and indicate if authors want to have figures printed in colour or black and white. Failure to return the forms will delay the publication of manuscripts after they have been accepted.

5.2 Proof Reception and Correction
Once copy-edited and typeset, proofs of accepted manuscripts will be available from the typesetter's e-proofing site: an email will be sent to the author and will feature instructions on how to check the proof and return corrections.

6 Publication

6.1 Early view
The Early View version of a paper is considered to be the final, published product and will be identical to the subsequent printed version - the only difference is that the printed version will contain page numbers and volume/issue information, and if necessary some minimal rearrangement of white space/figures for print purposes: the content will be entirely unaltered. For copyright purposes, the PDF version mounted online is considered the definitive version rather than the full-text HTML.

Early View differs from other advance-of-print systems because it features fully complete articles, with full colour figures, all tables and active reference linking through PubMed and Crossref.

Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article. For more information on DOI, please click here.

6.2 Offprints
A PDF offprint of the online published article will be sent free of charge to the corresponding author. Later special requests entail extra charges.

7 Author Material Archive Policy
Please note that unless specifically requested, Wiley-Blackwell will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted two months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the editorial office or production editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so."
