Aims and Scope

Working USA: The Journal of Labor and Society is a peer-review cross-disciplinary social science quarterly journal intended for a broad exploration of the economic, political, and social dimensions of work and labor. The journal publishes articles directed to an open and critical analysis of the U.S. and global labor movement. The journal editors see a strong and robust labor movement as a force that is central to the immediate and long-term social, economic, and political interests of the working class. The journal endeavors to promote thoughtful analysis of the current and future prospects of workers that advances beyond the narrow goals of individuals. We see workers as a force that organized labor must embrace to advance the struggle for social and economic justice.

Submission Guidelines

It is strongly recommended that submissions are free of jargon or abstract and oblique methodological formulations and are accessible to subdisciplinary fields but directed to a broader academic and labor readership. Manuscripts should be typewritten double-spaced with notes, references, tables, figures, and charts. Article manuscripts must range from 2,500 to 7,500 words and accompanied by an abstract of 100 to 150 words in length clearly stating the goals, objectives, methods, and arguments of the author. Authors should include a two-sentence biography indicating name, affiliation, research interests and, if applicable, publications. Please note that Word 2007 is not yet compatible with journal production systems. Unfortunately, the journal cannot accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents until such time that a stable production version is released. Please use Word's 'Save As' option therefore to save your documents as an older (.doc) file type.

There are three preferred formats for digital artwork submission: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), Portable Document Format (PDF), and Tagged Image Format (TIFF). We suggest that line art be saved as EPS files. Alternately, these may be saved as PDF files at 600 dots per inch (dpi) or better at final size. Tone art, or photographic images, should be saved as TIFF files with a resolution of 300 dpi at final size. For combination figures, or artwork that contains both photographs and labeling, we recommend saving figures as EPS files, or as PDF files with a resolution of 600 dpi or better at final size. More detailed information on the submission of electronic artwork can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp

The peer review process is blind and anonymous for both authors and readers. Articles sent to readers for peer-review do not include the names or affiliations of authors. Similarly, writers are not provided the names or affiliations of the readers.

NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Author Services.

Author Services enables authors to track their article -- once it has been accepted -- through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production so they do not need to contact the Production Editor to check on progress. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission, and more.
