NOTES FOR AUTHORS

Mission Transactions in GIS is an international journal that aims to publish original research articles, review articles, guest editorials, short technical notes, and book reviews on the key ideas, technologies, and applications of interest to geographic information scientists. Within this broad remit, we recognize four interconnected themes as follows:

· Practical and theoretical issues influencing the development of the core geographic information technologies (geographic information systems, global positioning systems, and remote sensing)

· The collection, analysis, modeling, interpretation, and display of geospatial data with these core technologies

· The connections between these three core technologies and related technologies

· New applications that help to solve problems affecting the natural, built, social, and/or business environments

The journal will not knowingly publish manuscripts that have appeared in conference proceedings and elsewhere in the same or substantially unaltered form.

Language: Manuscripts should be presented in English.

Submission Transactions in GIS has now adopted ScholarOne Manuscripts, for online manuscript submission and peer review. The new system brings with it a whole host of benefits including:

· Quick and easy submission

· Administration centralised and reduced

· Significant decrease in peer review times

From now on all submissions to the journal must be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tgis. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. If you require assistance then click Get Help Now link which appears at the top right of every ScholarOne Manuscript page. If you cannot submit online, please contact Dr. John P. Wilson in the Editorial Office by email: jpwilson@usc.edu.

Refereeing All manuscripts will be submitted for refereeing. Referees shall be confidential. The Editors will have ultimate responsibility for accepting manuscripts.

Presentation of manuscripts Manuscripts should be typed in double line spacing with a margin of at least 3 mm all round. Pages should be numbered. Manuscripts should be set out as follows: (a) Title page, with names and affiliations of author(s), a short title for the running head, four or five key words for indexing purposes, and the name and address of the corresponding author; (b) Abstract of up to 200 words on a separate page; (c) Main text with sections and subsections numbered 1, 2, 2.1, 2.2, etc.; (d) Acknowledgements; (e) References, as described below; (f) Tables, each on a separate sheet, numbered in sequence, and with a caption; (g) Illustrations, each on a separate sheet, numbered in sequence, and with a caption; and (h) Separate list of illustration numbers and captions.

Length of manuscripts should not exceed 6,000 words without the approval of the Editor. Final submission of manuscripts should comprise digital copies of text, tables, and illustrations.

References These should be supplied using the author/date system. References should be cited in the text as either Wilson (1999), Wilson and Ryan (1999), or Wilson et al. (1999) and listed in alphabetical order by author or chronological order by author (oldest first) in the reference list. Titles of books, periodicals, conference proceedings, and publishers should be supplied in full and not abbreviated. References to material published on the Internet should give the full Universal Reference Locator (URL). Some examples of commonly cited reference formats are:

Journal Articles: Borusso G 2003 Network density and the delineation of urban areas. Transactions in GIS 7: 177-91

There are several software packages available to help authors manage and format the references and footnotes in their journal article. We recommend the use of a software tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.

EndNote reference styles can be searched for here:

Copyright Transfer Agreement - Authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement (CTA) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the CTA is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received (US Federal Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission, authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). To assist authors, an appropriate form will be supplied by the editorial office. Alternatively, authors may like to download a copy of the form from www.wiley.com/go/ctabglobal. Please send the completed form to: Dr. John P. Wilson, Transactions in GIS, Department of Geography, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089-2055, USA. A fax to 001-213-7409687 is acceptable but the original must follow within 7 days.

Proofs and offprints The corresponding author will receive an email alert containing a link to a web site. A working e-mail address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following web site:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Hard copy proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available. Excessive changes made by the author in the proofs, excluding typesetting errors, will be charged separately.

A PDF offprint of the article will be supplied upon publication and offprints of articles in multiples of 100 and copies of the journal issue can be ordered when the proofs are returned.

Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell's Author Services.
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor. For more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
