TopAuthor Guidelines

1. Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism has now adopted Manuscript Central, for online manuscript submission and peer review. The new system brings with it a whole host of benefits including:

• Quick and easy submission
• Administration centralised and reduced
• Significant decrease in peer review times

From now on all submissions to the journal must be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sena. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. If you require assistance then click the Get Help Now link which appears at the top right of every Manuscript Central page. If you cannot submit online, please contact Carolyn Heitmeyer in the Editorial Office by e-mail (c.m.heitmeyer@lse.ac.uk).
Books for reviews should be sent to the Book Reviews Editor at: Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism, Department of Government, London School of Economics and Political Science, Houghton Street, London WC2A 2AE. All copyright of papers and other articles submitted to SEN are to be transferred to SEN after the final manuscripts are received by SEN just before publication. By submitting the manuscript to SEN, authors agree to abide by SEN Copyright Guidelines.
It is the individual author's responsibility to ensure that the manuscript submitted does not cause any copyright infringements, defamation, and other legal issues. SEN will not indemnify any author facing lawsuits from copyright or other legal infringements.

2. Author's name, title and full address with a brief biographical note should be typed on a separate page. An abstract of 100 - 150 words should be typed on a separate page.

3. Articles should not exceed 8,000 words (including endnotes and references), and should have a minimum length of 5,500 words. Book reviews should be 600 - 800 words long.

4. Quotations should be enclosed within single quotation marks. Substantial quotations of 40 or more words should be indented without quotation marks.

5. Foreign language text should always be italicised, even when lengthy. American spelling is accepted but spelling practice should be consistent throughout the article.

6. The 'Harvard' system should be used for bibliographical references in the text and notes: give author's name, year of publication and page number(s) in round brackets, eg: (Jones 1990:20-1).

7. Tables should be properly titled and numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text. Illustrations such as diagrams, maps and graphs must be referred to as 'Figures', must have their own title and must be numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text. Necessary permission must be obtained by the author for the reproduction of any illustration or table already published. It is the policy of Studies in Ethnicity and Nationalism for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. This is in line with conventional practice amongst other journals. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Wiley-Blackwell require you to complete and return a Colour Work Agreement Form before your paper can be published. The Colour Work Agreement Form should be returned to the Production Editor, Paul Dewar, at Wiley-Blackwell, 101 George Street, EH2 3ES Edinburgh, UK.

8. Notes, which should be kept to a minimum, will be printed as endnotes and should be typed single spaced as a separate section preceding the References.

9. A bibliography should be included at the end of the article starting on a new page and titled References. The list should be alphabetical by surname of author. Author's names should be in upper and lower case, while the titles of books should be in italics, eg Archer, Margaret S 1988. Culture and Agency: The Place of Culture in Social Theory. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.

10. It is a condition of acceptance that a contribution has not already appeared in print and that if accepted it will not be reproduced elsewhere without permission of SEN. Authors will be required to sign an Exclusive Licence Form (ELF) for all papers accepted for publication. Signature of the ELF is a condition of publication and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless a signed form has been received. Please note that signature of the Exclusive Licence Form does not affect ownership of copyright in the material. (Government employees need to complete the Author Warranty sections, although copyright in such cases does not need to be assigned). After submission authors will retain the right to publish their paper in various media/circumstances (please see the form for further details). Authors may like to download a copy of the form here.

11. Proofs will be dispatched by the publisher to the contributor who should return them, with misprints corrected as soon as possible. Other alterations made at this stage will be charged to the contributor. One copy of the issue containing the article will be supplied free of charge to the corresponding authors.
