TopAuthor Guidelines

Journal of Popular Music Studies is an interdisciplinary journal covering a wide range of approaches to popular music. Submissions are not limited to any disciplinary, methodological, or theoretical approach. Each submission is considered by external specialist reviewers familiar with the specific topic of the essay as well as the field of popular music studies. In every case, preference will be given to manuscripts that are challenging and original as well as clearly and persuasively written.

Please note that Word 2007 is not yet compatible with journal production systems. Unfortunately, the journal cannot accept Microsoft Word 2007 documents until such time as a stable production version is released. Please use Word's 'Save As' option therefore to save your document as an older (.doc) file type. To submit a manuscript for consideration, send an electronic copy with a title page including name, institutional affiliation, mailing address, phone number, and email address; please do not include any information that would identify you as author in the body of the manuscript. Each manuscript page should be numbered and contain an abbreviated title. References should follow The MLA Style Manual, 2nd ed. (New York: MLA, 1998). Please send submissions to Kevin J . H. Dettmar (jpms@pomona.edu); questions about reviews (of books, music, videos, Web sites, and so on), and queries about other features (roundtables, creative work, pedagogical essays and From the Field reviews) should be directed to this same e-mail address.

Manuscripts should be typed and double spaced with at least one-inch margins on each side. Manuscripts may range from a minimum of 5,000 words to a maximum of 7,500 words, including notes and bibliography. Authors wishing to submit manuscripts below or exceeding these guidelines must consult with the editor prior to submission. Music transcriptions, song lyrics, photographs, tables, and other graphics can be included with an indication of placement in the text. Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions for all copyrighted materials.

There are three preferred formats for digital artwork submission: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), Portable Document Format (PDF), and Tagged Image Format (TIFF). We suggest that line art be saved as EPS files. Alternately, these may be saved as PDF files at 600 dots per inch (dpi) or better at final size. Tone art, or photographic images, should be saved as TIFF files with a resolution of 300 dpi at final size. For combination figures, or artwork that contains both photographs and labeling we recommend saving figures as EPS files, or as PDF files with a resolution of 600 dpi or better at final size. More detailed information on the submission of electronic artwork can be found at www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp

Receipt of manuscripts will be acknowledged promptly, and authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection in a timely fashion. The Editor receives manuscripts with the understanding that they have not been published previously and that they have not been submitted for publication consideration elsewhere. It is requested that the author confirm this fact in writing when transmitting the manuscript for publication consideration.

A statement giving the publisher a Copyright Transfer Agreement to publish the manuscript will be required for manuscripts that are accepted for publication. The Editor will supply the necessary form for this copyright license or it can be downloaded here: (www.wiley.com/go/ctaaus). All manuscripts submitted for publication consideration become the property of the publisher and cannot be returned to authors unless special arrangements are made with the Editor. The corresponding author will receive one complimentary copy of the issue in which the article appears and will also receive a complimentary PDF.
