TopAuthor Guidelines

Please note it is essential that the following guidelines are adhered to. Please make sure that you have included all relevant information, contact details and as a final check see checklist below.

Final Checklist
Please make sure you have included the following:

  • Prefix each article title with 'Review Article:', unless it is an original scientific study;
  • A completed original copyright assignment form must accompany each article;
  • Full contact details including email address.

Once the person from the Agency or Pharmaceutical Company has collected all the manuscripts from the Guest Editor, they can then submit the papers to Blackwell.

The Guest Editor must provide a letter certifying that he or she has read and reviewed each article, and that each is suitable for publication.

All papers must be submitted in hardcopy and electronic format.

Each paper will be reviewed by the journal's main Editors, who will make the final decision concerning its suitability for publication.

The Copyright Assignment Form must be signed by the corresponding author for each paper and the original sent along with the papers to:

For legal reasons, Copyright Assignment Forms must be received in house before work can begin on the manuscripts.

Papers must be submitted exclusively to the Journal and are accepted on the understanding that they have not been and will not be published elsewhere. The corresponding author should provide a fax number and e-mail address to speed communication.

Presentation of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be typed (with a wide margin), double spaced on one side of standard paper (A4 30 × 21 cm). Authors should retain one copy of all material, as the Editors cannot accept responsibility for loss of, or damage to, manuscripts. Only glossy prints of rejected manuscripts will be returned after review.

When submitting the manuscript on disk, all artwork should be in the appropriate electronic format. Save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS) and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF at 250-300 dpi at final size). Ideally, vector graphics that have been saved in metafile (.WMF) or pict (.PCT) format should be embedded within the body of the text file. For more detailed instructions, visit Here.

The corresponding author of all submitted manuscripts must also supply a current e-mail address.

A title page should contain the author's name(s), appointments and place of work at the relevant time. A full and a short running title should be given, together with a small number of keywords for indexing purposes.

The text should start with a structured Summary, not exceeding 200 words, and organized into sections under the headings Background, Aim, Methods, Results, Conclusions. The paper should then proceed conventionally: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion. Only 3 levels of headings should be used. Pages to be numbered consecutively in arabic numerals, but tables, footnotes, figure legends including magnifications and acknowledgements are to be submitted on separate sheets.

Reports of clinical trials should adhere to the tenets of the CONSORT statement (JAMA 1996; 276: 637-9).

Tables and Figures
Authors may provide either fully-lettered illustrations or unlettered originals with copies on which the lettering has been clearly indicated. All illustrations should have the authors' names and figure numbers clearly marked. Where there is any possibility of doubt, the upper margin of the illustration should be indicated.

Only high-resolution figure files should be submitted, preferably in TIFF format. As a guide, the ideal figure resolution/specification for various types of original figures, at their final size, is as follows: (1) Line art - Minimum 600 dpi; (2) Halftone (i.e. both B/W and Colour photographs) - Minimum 300 dpi; (3) Line and tone (line art and halftone combined) - Minimum 600 dpi. Adherence to these requirements from the outset will prevent the Production Editor from contacting the author at a later stage for better quality figures. We can also use EPS files, please see the instructions on our website at site http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp

Units and Abbreviations
All measurements should be in SI units with the exception of haemoglobin (g/dL) and blood pressure (mmHg). Original observations recorded in other units should be stated, together with the appropriate conversion factors. Standard abbreviations, without punctuation, are used. Units, Symbols and Abbreviations (1988) published by the Royal Society of Medicine, and SI: The International System of Units (1982) from HMSO provide useful guides.

Abbreviations, used sparingly, should follow the first full spelling, in parentheses.

Statistics
Methods should be referenced. Two-tailed significance tests should be used unless explicitly stated. Controls should be described as completely as experimental subjects.

Measures of location should be accompanied by measures of variability (e.g. mean and confidence intervals) as well as conventional probability values. Clinical trial reports should include the power of the study design.

References
Please use the Vancouver system. References should be numbered in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text, and should be identified in the text, tables and legends by arabic numbers in parentheses. The first three authors and 'et al.' should be used if there are more than six authors.

The form of references adopted by the US National Library of Medicine and used in Index Medicus applies. References must be verified by the authors against the original documents.

Drug Names
Generic names should, in general, be used. If an author so desires, brand names may be inserted in parentheses.

Disks
The final version of the hard copy and the file on disk must be the same. Note the software used, the type of computer, and any special (non-keyboard) characters used. Do not use the carriage return (enter) at the end of lines within a paragraph. Do not justify. Turn the hyphenation option off. Disks will not be returned to authors. Save figures in as many different formats as are available to you. Encapsulated postscript (EPS) files can usually be used but cannot be modified. Always enclose a hard copy of figures and tables. On acceptance of their paper, authors should submit a disk of the final version.
