TopAuthor Guidelines

In order to provide rapid publication of articles submitted to ADI, the journal keeps the copyediting of articles to a minimum. Authors are responsible for ensuring that all content is ready for publication using AMA 9th edition guidelines. Please consult this guide when finalizing your manuscript for submission, and ensure that the language and content of the submitted article are ready for publication. If a submitted article is not in a state fit for publication, the article will be returned to the author for correction without being reviewed. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please contact Mike Stein, Editor-in-Chief.

Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission. Authors wishing to pursue a professional English-language editing service should make contact and arrange payment with the editing service of their choice. For more details regarding recommended services, please refer to http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/english_language.asp

About ADI
Archives of Drug Information (ADI) is an online-only, peer-reviewed journal which provides high quality, rapid, no-fuss publication of original unbiased scientific articles about drugs. ADI makes available to the public information that other journals may regard as being of low priority for publication and of archival interest. It provides free access to citable and searchable information about drugs. ADI does not charge readers but authors pay a manuscript fee.

What we publish
ADI publishes papers presenting original research about drugs. Papers that would be of low priority for traditional scientific journals but are the routine work of drug development, for example early drug development studies, routine pharmacokinetic or drug-drug interaction studies, dose-finding studies, animal toxicity studies, pilot studies, and negative clinical studies are welcome. We publish a broad range of work including cellular, animal and human studies. We do not publish opinion pieces, meta-analyses or review articles. Letters to the Editor will be considered but must relate to a paper previously published in the Journal.

Manuscript Fee
Manuscripts accepted for publication will incur our 'open access' fee (see lastest copyright licence paperwork for current fee) for papers up to 10 pages in length. Additional pages are charged at a cost of US$ 250 each. Processing for publication will not proceed until payment is received.

Copyright
In view of copyright laws and free on-line access to readers accepted papers must complete the Wiley-Blackwell copyright assignment forms. These forms will be sent to authors upon acceptance of the article. Accepted papers will not be sent for publication until these forms are complete.

Criteria for publication
To be published in ADI a paper must fulfill the following criteria:
• Present original research about a drug or compound that has not been published elsewhere.
• Studies involving humans and animals must be performed ethically and approved by the authors' Institutional Review Board or its equivalent.
• Studies are of high quality with the Methods and Results fully described. Weaknesses and limitations are acknowledged.
• Information is free of bias.

How to present your study
The Introduction should be concise (a few sentences will suffice) and state the objectives of the study. The emphasis of your paper should be on the Methods and Results. A Discussion is not required, but if one is included it should be brief; the focus of papers submitted to ADI should be data presentation. A Conclusion is not required but, if included, should summarize the data and not speculate about its importance or interpretation. ADI is about presenting the information rather than opinions about what they might mean. In other words, many articles published in ADI will look much like a report of a study prepared for a regulatory agency.

How to organize and submit your paper

Please arrange your paper and submit it in the following way:

1. Manuscripts must be submitted online. For complete detailed instructions on uploading your manuscript, please read the submission instructions on the Archives of Drug Information online submission site: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ADI. Any major word processing software may be used, and both DOS-based and Macintosh operating systems are acceptable but Microsoft Word is preferred. The author checklists should all be completed during the submission process. Complete instructions for preparing and submitting manuscripts online are provided at the submission site. If you need assistance, please contact our support staff by phone at 1-434-817-2040 × 167 or via e-mail at Support@Scholarone.com.

2. You will be asked to enter the Title (50 words maximum), authors' names, affiliations, keywords, generic drug name and brand name, the type of study, study phase, and the study registration number.

  1. The paper itself should be uploaded as a Microsoft Word file and organized as follows:
    1) Abstract: Limit 300 words. A structured abstract with subheadings: Introduction (or Objectives), Methods and Results is recommended. Please provide quantitative data with measures of variance (such as SD or 95% CI) to illustrate the major findings in the results.
    2) Introduction: Briefly state the objectives of the study. The Introduction can be a single paragraph.
    3) Methods: Provide details regarding ethical approval of the study and the Methods used.
    4) Results: Provide the Results of your studies. Link the text to Figures and Tables by mentioning these in the text.
    5) Discussion (optional): A Discussion is not essential. The Methods and Results of your study contain the key information communicated. If you have a Discussion section, do not interpret or speculate about the results, rather stick to the facts. For example, rather than "drug A is safe" rephrase as "drug A did not cause any serious adverse effects in the 10 healthy volunteers studied."
    6) Conclusion (optional): A single sentence or paragraph summarizing the main findings will suffice. Do not express opinion or speculate.
    7) References: References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text and indicated by a number in squared brackets in the text. References should follow the format outlined in the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html).

For example:
Standard journal article:
List the first six authors followed by et al., or list all authors.

Journal article on the Internet:
Abood S. Quality improvement initiative in nursing homes: the ANA acts in an advisory role. Am J Nurs [serial on the Internet]. 2002 Jun [cited 2002 Aug 12];102(6):[about 3 p.]. Available from: http://www.nursingworld.org/AJN/2002/june/Wawatch.htm

Part of a database on the Internet:

3. Tables: Each table should have an appropriate title, be self-explanatory, and should not duplicate the text. The data should be logical and well organized so that it can be used to compare or classify related items. Tables should also be typed double-spaced, including headings, on 8.5 × 11 inch page size. Larger page sizes must not be utilized.

If a table must be continued, a second 8.5 × 11 inch page should be used and the headings of all columns and lines repeated. They should also be arranged such that when they are printed, they will not be wider than the width of one typed page (6.5 inches). Tables should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals beginning with 1.

4. Figures: Color illustrations are encouraged, and will not attract a cost to authors. Only high-resolution figure files should be submitted, preferably in TIFF format. As a guide, the ideal figure resolution/specification for various types of original figures, at their final size, is as follows:

(1) Line art - Minimum 600 dpi;
(2) Halftone (i.e. both B/W and Color photographs) - Minimum 300 dpi;
(3) Line and tone (line art and halftone combined) - Minimum 600 dpi.

Adherence to these requirements from the outset will prevent the Production Editor from contacting the author at a later stage for better quality figures. We can also use EPS files, please see the instructions on our website at http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor/illustration.asp.

5. Conflict of Interest Statement - please include a conflict of interest statement for each author. For example, if a paper has 4 authors (A, B, C and D) the conflict of interest statement might read as follows. Mr. A has identified no conflict of interest, Dr. B is an employee of XX Inc. and holds stock in YY, Mrs. C. has received honoraria from YY Inc. and acted as a consultant to ZZ Inc; Dr D. has received payment for lectures from AA Inc. The conflict of interest statement will be published with the paper.

Length of Manuscripts
There are no rigid limitations (other than the abstract) on the word count for a manuscript or particular sections of it.

Letters to the Editor
Letters to the Editor must relate to a paper previously published in the Journal and must be 500 words or less and contain a maximum of 1 Figure and 1 Table and 5 references.

Nomenclature
Please use International Nonproprietary Names (INN) for pharmaceutical substances or active pharmaceutical ingredients. Refer to a drug by its generic name and provide the brand name in parentheses after the generic name is used for the first time in the text.

Ethical Obligations
Authors
As outlined in "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" http://www.icmje.org/, all persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship, and all those who qualify should be listed. Each author must have participated sufficiently to take public responsibility for appropriate portions of the content.

Contributors who are not authors
If others contributed to the writing or analysis of the paper (for example professional writers), their contributions and sources of financial support should be provided under a heading "Acknowledgments" between the body of the text and the References.

What happens to your paper after it is submitted
Articles submitted to ADI will be reviewed rapidly (usually within 10 days) by an editor and another reviewer. If the manuscript is suitable for publication in ADI you will be asked to submit a revised manuscript. Changes to the manuscript will driven by the need to remove bias and to improve the quality of your paper. Once appropriate changes have been made and evaluated by the editor (and if need be, reviewers), if the revised article is suitable for publication in ADI it will be provisionally accepted.

The corresponding author will be asked to sign an open online copyright form and complete a manuscript fee payment form. Once these completed forms have been received the manuscript will be accepted and proceed to proofreading and publication. Please note that articles will not be extensively copyedited. Authors are responsible for ensuring that their material is in a publishable state upon submission.

You will be notified when the proofs are ready for you to check for errors. No substantive additions are permitted in the proof stage. After you have approved the proofs the paper will be published on-line. After the paper has been published no changes can be made. Any errors will be corrected by the publication of Errata.

Originality and Responsibility
Work submitted must be original and cannot have been published elsewhere, nor should it be under consideration for publication elsewhere. To reproduce Tables or Figures that have been published elsewhere the authors must obtain written permission from the copyright owner and must attribute the work appropriately in the paper. Authors must inform the Editor if the manuscript shares data with other manuscripts published, in process, or planned when submitting a manuscript. The authors, and not the Editors or Publishers, are solely responsible for the originality, transparency, accuracy and validity of published papers.

Ethical Research
ADI subscribes to the principles of the Declaration of Helsinki and authors must have complied with ethical and legal standards for performing experiments on human beings and animals. Manuscripts that describe studies on humans or animals must indicate in the Methods that the study was approved by the appropriate an institutional review committee, and for studies in humans, that the subjects gave informed consent.
