By its very nature, successful aquaculture enterprises must be sustainable, that is, they must have minimal adverse impact on the environment while promoting the growth and well-being of the organism being cultured. However, in recent years, the need for efficient and perpetual (sustainable) aquaculture in the world has been brought sharply into focus as trends predict that it will be seafood that will supply a majority of the world's protein to an ever-growing human populace. The papers in this issue serve as potent examples that the quest for sustainable, efficient, profitable, and environmentally-responsible aquaculture never stops. It is no coincidence that many deal with replacement of marine fish meal in aquaculture diets as the most pressing issue facing the global aquaculture industry is the use of this expensive and very-limited resource. If aquaculture is to remain profitable and to continue to expand throughout the world as it has done the past 20 years to supply the world's protein needs, diets must be fed that have as little fish meal, if any, in them. However, replacement of fish meal is not the only topic that can assist in ensuring that aquaculture will be sustainable. Use of recirculating systems to culture organisms, efficient biosecurity and disease treatment and prevention practices, proper pond and water quality management. polyculture of different culture organisms, and use of biological filter systems to remove wastes are jsut a few of the topics covered in this issue. Enjoy!
