- FTP (file transfer protocol) -- Software that allows a
user to log onto a remote computer and retrieve a file.
- Telnet -- Software that permits users to log onto distant
computer sites and use their facilities remotely.
- E-mail -- One of the first Internet applications, permitting
users to correspond with each other through their Internet addresses.
Accepted keyboard conventions for expressing feelings in e-mail are
called smileys.
- USENET discussion groups -- On-line forums on thousands
of topics, either open to all Internet users or requiring registration
to become a participant.
