Unicode
Anew standard coding scheme that allows 65,536 different binary codes because it uses 16 bits to code a character.

Universal Product Code (UPC)
A bar code printed on most consumer goods that indicates the manufacturer of the good, as well as the product itself. It can be read by a scanner input device for computer processing.

Unix
An operating system designed for portability and flexibility among a variety of computers, from microcomputers to supercomputers.

uploading
Transferring files to a central computer on a network from a remote machine such as a personal computer.

USENET
A general term for the thousands of user discussion groups on the Internet devoted to many subjects, including some that are strictly for adults.

user interface
The way a user communicates with the computer.
