Nancy Stern graduated from Barnard College with a B.A. in Mathematics, from New York University with a M.S. in Computer Science, and from the State University of New York at Stony Brook with a Ph.D. in the History of Science and Technology. Dr. Stern has been teaching Computer Information Systems for 29 years, the last 18 as Brodlieb Distinguished Professor of Business at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. Besides teaching a wide variety of information technology courses, she has developed a multimedia program and multimedia course material that introduces students to the use of sound, animation and video in computer presentations.
Robert A. Stern graduated from Lehigh University with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and a B.S. in Business Administration, from New York University with an M.S. in Operations Research, and from St. John's University with a J.D. degree. He has been Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Nassau Community College for 28 years. Besides teaching information processing courses, Prof. Stern specializes in legal and ethical issues relating to computing.
The Sterns have been writing textbooks for 28 years, although they look too young to have been professionally active for so long (they think so, anyway). They have two grown daughters (who have made them look older) both of whom are in business fields. They travel extensively to countries like Kenya, Vietnam, and Brunei, not only because they enjoy them but because it makes it more difficult for their publishers to reach them (NB: We have a few tricks up our sleeves too!). They like to play golf and tennis, but wish they were better at both. They play bridge and try not to argue while doing so. They prefer to save their arguing for their textbook pursuits - they think that debating enhances the creative process. We think so too!
