Slide 15: Mt. Kilimanjaro as seen from the Space Shuttle is Africashighest peak. This volcanic complex straddles the Kenya/Tanzania border and has threemain peaks: Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo. The highest point in the complex isUhuru peak at19,340 feet (5895 m) in elevation; all have been active at various times. The secondphoto shows the permanent glaciers below the rim of Uhuru peak in the crater which are slowly disappearing. This photo was taken from a position about 100 feet away from the glacier by Carl Rosenberg and others of his team.
